Temple officer named Cameron police chief
At a special Cameron City Council meeting held February 21 Maynard M. Byers of Temple was appointed Cameron’s new police chief to replace resigning Former Chief Willie Dolan. Byers, 35, served since 1954 with Temple police and has prior Fort Hood experience. He will report February 1, with Acting Chief Marshall Terry returning to downtown traffic duties.

August Kunz announced his bid for Cameron Post 5 on the city council, challenging incumbent Lincoln Mondrik. Kunz, former alderman and current Milam County draft board head, operates a Cameron planing mill. Filing closes 30 days before April 2 election day.

Cameron man elected business manager of Pioneer Roundup
Donald M. Rose of Cameron was elected to the post of Business Manager for the Sam Houston State College Pioneer Roundup Association. He will help lead preparations for the 1957 Pioneer Roundup week set for April 4 to 6 and the construction of a pioneer village display at the Walker County Fair Grounds. Rose, son of Carl R. and Mrs. Rose, is a junior accounting major at Sam Houston and a Cameron High School graduate of 1954.

Local Residents To Attend Sealy Church Dedication
Residents of Cameron and Milam County plan to attend the dedication of the Immaculate Conception Church in Sealy on Sunday March 3. Bishop L J Reicher of the Austin Diocese will officiate at the solemn dedication followed by a Solemn High Mass. A daylong celebration with meals will be held in Firemen's Park Sealy.

February Rain Totals in Milam County Reach 2.68 Inches
Rain for the 24 hour period ending 6 p.m. last Saturday totaled 1.32 inches, lifting February’s total to 2.68 inches. Alvin Hefft, Milam County official weather recorder and Cameron Water Department superintendent, notes the Saturday storm was the heaviest day of the month in Cameron. Other Milam areas reported over two inches that day. Rain fell on five days in February with temperatures tracked from Feb 19 to Feb 26.

Active Cameron cattle sale with strong demand
Last Thursday February 21 Cameron Livestock Auction sold 309 head with strong demand for stocker cattle. Butcher cattle and stockers rose 50 cents to 75 cents, cows with calves in demand, calves and fat cows priced, hogs at 17 dollars per hundredweight, 48 buyers including 11 packers, and one goat was sold.

Mrs Jess Avera Dies In Rockdale
Mrs Jess Avera aged 70 died in a Rockdale hospital at 3 am Sunday after living in Cameron most of her life and moving to Rockdale two years ago. Final rites were held Monday at 2 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Cameron with Rev. John Soloman officiating. Interment followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. Marek Burns Funeral Home was in charge. Survived by her husband active pallbearers included Alvin Dusek John Muse Drayton Mc Lane Lee McLane Harold Pruitt and Sam Perry.
