A Weathered scene opens with a traveler seeking shelter in a storm, then shifts to a farm crisis note attributed to J. B. W. and Lowe Wren. The Herald reports on 1930 cotton disaster warnings by Carl Williams of the Federal Farm Board, urging broad acreage cuts to restore supply and demand balance, urging area wide action.
Henry Ford announced plans to give 109 million to education, noting a five year start of a one million dollar gift to the Martha Berry School in Mount Berry Georgia. Founded by Miss Martha Berry twenty eight years ago the学校 aid mountain boys and girls, with local support from Cameron residents and the Sarah McCalla Chapter D A R contributing in the past.
The Gulf Refining Company purchased the Mrs. L. H. Posey home east of the First Baptist church for 10000 dollars and will build a modern service station. The Posey residence is being wrecked to clear the site while Gulf begins major Cameron construction. A new Posey home and family residence is also underway nearby.
A three act amateur play titled Ruth in a Rush centers on Ruth racing to catch a train but stalled by an eloping lunatic couple. Characters include Mrs Brownell Ruth's aunt Amelia Matocha Juliet Raymond Lydia Marek Ruth Macdonald Moore Mary Manning Susie Helen Monidrik Leonard Bruce Charley Manning Wayne Ashley with all performers trained by the ladies of St. Rita's Circle.
The society buzzes as widow Zander plans a March 6 wedding to millionaire Benjamin Gump in Cameron. The Yee High school auditorium hosts a comic strip themed production by Cameron’s Parent-Teacher Association with Miss Ma Lake Henderson directing a cast of famous characters.
Manuel and Leo Werner purchase the J. D. Dobbins grocery stock and will run the business as Werner Brothers Grocery. The store remains cash and self serve with special prices offered for Saturday. The Werner brothers previously worked for Dobbins and are noted as experienced grocers.
Misses Cora Barmore and Nancy Réa Slocomb spent last weekend in Austin as guests of Miss Florence Atkinson at the University of Texas.
The third annual National Business and Professional Women's Week will be observed March 10 to 16. In Cameron the local executive board outlined plans to mark the week using the newspaper radio and motion picture theaters as publicity media.
Misses Inez Evans and Gracie Herndon students at Southwest Texas State Teachers College spent last weekend at their homes in Cameron.
Rosebud is now served with gas from Milam Oil & Gas wells known as the Whitefield field three miles south of town. Three wells, drilled early 1928 by J. C. and J. A. White on W. B. White land, produce 500,000 to 1,000,000 cubic feet daily each. Lone Star Gas Co. holds the Rosebud supply franchise with minimum 10 cent price. Two more wells are being drilled as Rosebud uses up to 1,000,000 cubic feet daily. Service began February 12.
Funeral services for Mrs. S S D Hanna were held at her daughter's home with Rev. Joel Hardigree officiating. Born March 24, 1855 in Christian County Kentucky, she moved to Texas in 1883, lived in Temple and Cameron, and spent final years with her daughter Mrs. Guy Slocomb. Survived by two children Henry Hanna and Mrs. Guy Slocomb. Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery with pallbearers J D Eplen, W D Favor, Raymond Beard, Roy Law, B Slocomb, Jim Adams.
In a formal address Carl Williams of the Federal Farm Board warns Dixie growers that 1929 may bring no meaningful government aid unless they cut cotton acreage. He cites falling quality of U S cotton, rising foreign quality, and warns against overplanting. Williams outlines two practical planting rules to avert a future surplus and protect prices.
The will names husband S F Brown as life holder of the homestead of 211 acres out of D Monroe League. Upon his death the property goes to grandchildren Helen Gandy Edward Gandy Dwight Gandy Fred Harvey Gandy George Banzhaf Gandy Elizabeth Gandy. Cash gifts include Lou Crowell 1000 dollars in annual 150 installments, J W Rhodes 500 dollars, L L Harbour 200 dollars, May McElwrath 200 dollars, Sam Shaw 200 dollars. Residue to grandchildren. Jeff T Kemp named executor without bond. probate court to file inventory. Dated April 18 1929.
Cameron History Club members invited guests to a Tuesday meeting where Hon. W G Gillis spoke on the World Court of Justice. He traced its formation and critiqued U S reluctance to fully join. Mary Lake Henderson reported on a session in Europe. Members urged letters to representatives and Texas senators. Guests enjoyed a social hour and refreshments at Mrs Ben Atkinson home.
