Mr and Mrs M M Johnson of Cameron plan their 59th wedding anniversary on Saturday February 28 They wed in Belton in 1889 Johnson has been a jeweler in Cameron for 60 years They are members of the Methodist church Family includes eight children twenty three grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren with several offspring coming from Dallas San Antonio Corpus Christi Refugio and Lockhart to join the celebration
The home of A J Gunnels Jr at Marak was almost totally destroyed by fire caused by a gas stove explosion. The blaze got out of control in minutes and neighbors saved only part of the contents. Neighbors have provided some household goods to Mr and Mrs Gunnels. He is the son of A J Gunnels Sr of Hanover.
Texas Department of Public Safety reports 1991 persons died on streets and highways in 1947, up 2 percent from 1946. Final 1947 total to be released March 18, with most deaths in cities over 2,500 population. January 1948 deaths total 127, seven percent lower than January 1947.
Mark Thomas, third son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas J. White of Houston, was born at Herman Hospital at 12 18 p.m. Friday February 20. He weighed five pounds thirteen ounces. Mother Ruth Marek of Burlington. They will be at 2509 McClendon Street. Father reared in Cameron, veteran combat pilot. They have two older sons Jeffrey Alan, three, and Phillip Milam.
Mr and Mrs David Craig and their son from Austin spent the weekend visiting Mrs E A Flinn, the mother of Mrs Craig, in this city.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cammer and their daughter Sharon Jean spent the past weekend with relatives in San Antonio.
Roy Vaughan a popular young businessman and World War II veteran formally declared his bid for District Clerk as a Democrat in the upcoming primary. A former Army Air Corps pilot and first lieutenant, Vaughan is married with two children and touted as well qualified and energetic by supporters.
S Williams of Sour Lake died February 17 after illness. He had been in decline and was treated in Houston before returning home. He leaves a widow, three children, and sisters Mrs. Cates of Houston, Mrs. Moore of Houston, Mrs. Wilch of Louisiana, and Mrs. Oliver of Cameron.
Sam Houston Jones concedes defeat after a bitter primary with Earl K. Long sweeping the vote. Long led early and maintained dominance as returns rolled in, signaling a decisive shift in Louisiana politics after a protracted run off and the Huey P. Long era.
A group of Southern governors from North Carolina South Carolina Texas and Arkansas with Maryland's W Preston Lane Jr pressed Democrats to oppose President Truman's civil rights program. They met with Democratic National Chairman J Howard McGrath who refused to back restoring the two thirds rule to give the South a veto at the national convention. The governors warned the South is no longer “in the bag” and urged broad Democratic support against Truman's civil rights proposals.
Milam County Farm Bureau names new directors at a Tuesday night meeting led by President S. W. McClaren. The board grows to 16 with SUNW H Kohring Walkers Creek H H Chamberlain Hanover and others. A countywide drive targets 400 new members from Buckholts and surrounding communities, with directors sought from San Gabriel Tracy Briary and more.
Henry A. Wallace testifies before the House Foreign Affairs Committee arguing that big bankers monopolists and militarists have weaponized the Marshall plan. He calls for new faces in the White House and outlines an eight point European recovery plan a ten year UN program totaling 50 billion dollars and joint Ruhr administration with the US USSR Britain and France plus a world food granary to combat hunger.
Mrs. Kate Gaston Shaw widow of Dr. E N Shaw an early Cameron physician died Tuesday night at her Eagle Pass home. Her body will arrive in Cameron Thursday to be received by Green Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian church and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by three children Dr. E N Shaw of Houston and Misses Dora and Sue Shaw of Eagle Pass.
Building permits in Cameron for January totaled 18180.00 announced by city Secretary W H Stafford. 1947 yearly total permits were 207919.00 and builders expect 1948 to be a banner year if materials are available and prices fall.
Mr and Mrs E H Sheffer and their son of Houston attended the funeral of Joe Earl Tate on Friday.
Carl P. Collins president of Fidelity Union Life Insurance Co will be the keynote at the Cameron Chamber of Commerce banquet on Tuesday March 9. L G Smith Chamber manager says preparations are complete and a full organization report will be given. The affair will be in the Methodist Church basement with women of the church catering. Tickets will go on sale next week announced Albert Collins publicity chairman.
E D Kelso a Milam county native and prominent Little River bottoms planter died at his Maysfield home on February 22 after a long illness. Born February 21 1875 he would have turned 71 soon. Funeral services were held February 23 at the Presbyterian Church in Maysfield with interment at Oak Hill Cemetery Cameron. Rev H M Bailey and Rev Gus Cravin conducted the rites. Surviving are his widow Berdie Massengale Kelso two daughters Mrs E R Land of Fort Worth and Mrs O J Curry of Denton three grandchildren. Pallbearers included Roy Massengale Robert Massengale Ralph Massengale Alfred Massengale Hugh Smith W S Kelso H L Yeager and Oscar Roberts.
Duncum Motor Company announces it is now showing Martin Outboard Motors to sportsmen in the area. Martin's two cycle outboard features mechanically controlled intake poppet valves. H B Monroe returns from Martin Motor School of Outboard Servicing. A full line of parts is stocked and Duncum is an authorized Martin sales and service depot. Public demonstration invited.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard C. DePew spent the weekend visiting Kenedy and San Antonio, enjoying local events and dining out. The trip highlighted leisure time away from home with sightseeing and social meetings in two Texas communities.
