Comptroller Reports City Sales Tax Rebates Totals Soar

Comptroller Bob Bullock mailed monthly rebates totaling 11.3 million to 741 cities and towns, bringing year to date rebates to 22.7 million. Cameron led with 5,132.61, Rockdale 3,633.72, Thorndale 2,301.78, Rosebud 1,404.14. Rogers and Lott received none. He cautioned bicentennial groups about sales tax permits and remittance. Gause Marker Tells Early Town History

An official Texas Historical Marker for Gause stands on US 79 between Orang and Olive Streets. The marker commemorates William J. Gause (1829 1914) and notes his move to Texas in 1849 and 1872 arrival in the area, the town’s platting in 1873, the post office opening in 1874, and the growth of cotton commerce and local businesses.

Social Security earnings report deadline for Miami County residents

Miami County residents who received social security benefits in 1975 must file a 1975 earnings report with the Social Security Administration if earnings exceeded $2,520. The deadline is April 15, 1976, per district manager Lewis Wall in Temple. Filing a federal tax return does not relieve this obligation. Those aged 72 during all of 1975 are exempt. Only wages and self employment earnings count. rentals, interest, and dividends do not. Penalty up to one month’s benefit applies for late filing. Local civic leaders listed.

Costs Delay Highway Projects in Cameron City

Cameron city faces delays on two highway projects due to a funds shortage. The $100,000 Fannin 22nd and Industrial Blvd. reconstruction relies on state and federal money, but the state cannot match federal funds at present. The second project, resurfacing Highway 36 from the Santa Fe underpass to the Y at 36 and 77, would be state funded with curb and gutter added past the underpass.

Public survey to map mental health needs across counties

The Central Counties Center for Mental Health and Mental Retardation will conduct a four week Needs Assessment in six counties Bell Coryell Erath Hamilton Lampasas and Milam. It will use mailed questionnaires a telephone survey and interviews with residents to identify needed community services.
