Vapam Offers Nematode Control for Gardens
County Agent discusses Vapam as an effective nematode control for gardens. Demonstrations with E J Provasek of Cameron in 1974 and subsequent tests led to wide distribution in 1975. New Wheat Strain Shows Mildew Resistance in Texas Trials
Texas researchers Neal A. Tuleen and Earl C. Gilmore cross bred rye chromosome resistance into wheat to create a Tri ticale derived line with 21 chromosome pairs. The mildew resistant strain is being tested at College Station Renner and Chillicothe stations and samples will be shared with wheat breeders worldwide for evaluation and use.

Local ownership grows in Texas cattle feedlots
About 85 percent of cattle in Texas feedlots are now locally owned, a shift from a few years ago. A survey of banks shows local banks provide about half the credit for feeding and correspondent banks supply another tenth, with local production credit associations handling much of the rest.

Cattle Costs Rise During Long Uprooted Cycle
Dr. Ed Uvacek of Texas A&M says cow keeping costs rose about 100 percent from 1972 to 1974, driven by inflation during cattle buildup. He notes cycles span about 10 years with liquidation in 1976 and a new cycle starting 1977. 1979 and 1981 expected to be strong for producers as calf and cow slaughter remain high and imports stay low.

Greenbug Resistant Grain Promises Some Relief
Greenbugs emerged as a major sorghum pest in Texas after 1968, infesting about 4.5 million acres across 70 counties. Repeated insecticide use led to resistance and field outbreaks in 1974 and 1975, prompting development of greenbug resistant grain sorghums. Resistance includes non-preference, tolerance, and antibiosis, yet resistant hybrids will still host bugs. Research indicates resistant lines combine non-preference and antibiosis, extending pest development and reducing offspring. A turning point notes the 1915 US wheat record.
