With the next Cameron city election set for April 2, three incumbents Grady Stidham Clif ford Thompson and Lincoln Mondick seek reelection to posts three four and five. Hayden Lawrence also files for Post Four challenging Thompson. Filing fees total 10 dollars with excess funds returned to candidates. Officials say filing closes 30 days before the election.
Milton Brown and Richard Williams of Cameron attended the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce Tri Regional Convention in Mineral Wells February 9 10 Brown elected vice president of the Texas Junior Chamber representing Region 16 Williams Cameron club president attended as local Jaycees representative Also state officers Douglas Guthrie Jr and Bettye Guthrie of Waco and Red Hightower Cameron president visited Cameron February 7 en route to Killeen to aid in organizing a Jaycee chapter there Guthrie longtime Jaycees member and former club secretary treasurer and Christmas Activities Chairman Hightower public relations director for General Telephone Company of the Southwest began in the Jaycees in 1949 and earned state and national awards in public relations and trade promotion.
Mr and Mrs Jack Pond of Cameron Route 2 report their son Stephen and his wife and child left Honolulu February 2 bound for San Diego where Stephen will attend eight weeks of Navy training before a 30 day leave. He has served in Hawaii two years and will be stationed in Adak Alaska next year.
P T A held its January meeting with a prayer by Mrs Theo Mikulec and a school song Praise to our School by Mrs August Hubnik adopted as official. Mrs Frank Mikulec will explore first aid instruction. members plan to attend the Milam Lee Bi County Council meeting January 24 in Buckholts. A yearbook was prepared for the spring conference in Rockdale. Elizabeth Hubnik thanked the group for a clock donated for Lott’s pupils.
Marak Catholic Youth Organization volleyball team played in Dime Box Bryan and Cameron tournaments, beating Frenstat Bryan Cyclone Bremond and Cameron but losing to Dime Box on January 13 and earning second place. Delegates reported on the National Catholic Youth Council Convention in Temple and planned a future public entertainment date.
Night Chief Brandenburg investigated a Sunday night report of a car in a private Cameron garage near the Dairy Queen. A teenage girl had parked her car in front and later found it vanished, only to discover it in a vacant garage belonging to another family after friends had moved it as a joke.
The American Heart Association stands as the sole national voluntary body focused entirely on advancing research, education, and community heart programs to combat heart diseases.
Maroon and Gray Day was held on Tuesday February 5 with entries from Ben Milam Ada Henderson and Yee High Schools. First place ribbons were prepared by the student council and presented at the basketball game by Wiley Loughmiller superintendent of these schools.
Staff Sgt. John B. Sapp and his crew flew a Jet B46 from a Florida base to San Antonio where the craft was shown at Randolph Field for several days. Sapp, son of Mr and Mrs J B Sapp of Cameron, was a former B 29 gunner and now serves as a bombardier on the Jet 66. He joined the Air Force after finishing high school in Rockdale in 1951 and now resides with his wife and two children in Destin, Florida.
Mayor Weems canceled an unscheduled February 7 meeting to address vote miscounts on Chief Willie Dolan's resignation after several councilmen and invitees failed to hear of the cancellation. A citizen meeting at city hall with 20 attendees elected Batte as chair while urging open council meetings and support for fair policing. The group planned to attend the February 19 council session, but the mayor later called off the meeting.
A chili supper will be held at the Minerva Community Center starting at 6 pm on Friday February 11. Proceeds will fund improvements to the Minerva youth center.
Miss Billie Nell Johnson of Cameron and Miss Mary Jo Harbur of Buckholts registered for the spring semester at Southwestern University in Georgetown. Johnson, a sophomore, pursues a BME degree and is active in choir Delta Omicron and Independent Organization. Harbur, also a sophomore, majors in English and belongs to the Independent Association and Kappa Phi.
The 19657 Heart Fund promotes the message Help Your Heart Fund Help Your Heart to urge public support and donations for heart health initiatives.
Cameron ISD tax collector Nina Wilkinson reports 93.33 percent of 1956 school taxes collected as of February 1 1957 and says delinquent notices will be mailed promptly. City tax collection leader Wayne Wieser notes city taxes are higher than last year but delinquent notices will be sent later. County tax office confirms delinquent notices.
The Cameron Yoemen trailed 15-12 after one quarter and lost 67-52 to University High in Waco last Tuesday. Top University scorers were Fugueroa with 22 and Campbell with 19, while Cameron’s leaders were Gene Hillman and Bobby Elliott with 15 each. The B team lost 58-30 in the preliminary game.
St Anthony’s P TA held a regular meeting on Tuesday January 22 at 7 30 p m in the Parish Hall with 35 members present A report on new school books was given by the president Guest speaker Dr David Shapiro Cameron school board discussed high school standards and credits for subjects and college prep He urged a student planning to enter college to meet basic science and math requirements Father Duda urged parental awareness and family planning A social hour followed with refreshments served by hostesses.
A home grounds improvement workshop will be held at College Station February 28 and March 1, 1957, under the direction of Miss Sadie Hatfield, homestead improvement specialist. Attendees should contact home demonstration agent Mrs Alice Hughes at Cameron by February 15 for more information.
William W. Caldwell a seaman apprentice in the U S Navy and son of Mr and Mrs Berry C Caldwell of Cameron departed January 27 from McMurdo Sound Antarctica for Little America aboard the seaplane tender USS Curtiss The Curtiss arrived at McMurdo Sound January 21 after clearing the ice pack and transported scientists and relief wintering over personnel for earth science studies during the International Geophysical Year 1957 58 She will return with the party of Navy men and scientists after spending the winter on the continent stopping at Port Lyttelton New Zealand to pick up passengers and supplies before continuing to the White Continent.
Cameron residents Jimmy Rettig and Ann Wimberly were among 65 students at Wharton County Junior College named to the B or Better honor list for the fall semester’s final nine weeks. Rettig balanced football and basketball with travel to out of town games while maintaining academic standing. Annie Lee Williams, the college public relations office, noted Rettig’s achievement and the roster of Cameron students.
The Pleasure and Profit Club met January 24 at Mrs. Herbert Nance’s home with 11 members present. Guests were Mrs. Wiley Loughmiller and Miss Mary Randolph. After a Collect for Club Women, a brief business session occurred and Mrs. Roy Hensley gave a book review of Jubilee by John Brick.
Police Chief Willie Dolan said February 12 his resignation will stand and he will remain until a replacement reports. He expressed gratitude to supporters of Cameron law enforcement. City Secretary Wayne Wieser noted two out of town applications, from Temple and Lott, had been received as of Tuesday.
Captain E K Browning Jr of the Austin District announces Texas Highway Patrol is accepting applications from men aged 21 to 35 for state patrol service. Interested applicants should submit by March and may discuss qualifications at the Austin office 5605 Adams. An examination will be held in Austin on March 12 1957. Applicants must meet height weight and character standards and will receive training pay and benefits during probation along with vacation sick leave state retirement and Social Security.
A meeting will be held at 2 pm Thursday February 14 in the county agent's office to discuss selection and storage of pecan budwood and related equipment. This first in a series aims to teach budding and grafting trees. attendees are welcome and budwood must be stored by February.
The Chamber of Commerce Banquet will be held March 4 1957 at Simon-George Hall at 7 30 pm with Master of Ceremonies Jack W Prescott. Special Agent in Charge Leonard Blaylock of the FBI San Antonio will be principal speaker. Narvie Caperton to introduce guests Lester Williams to present the McCullin Award. Final arrangements announced later this month.
Wendell Kirk of Cameron displays two purebred short horn steers. He plans to enter them in the Milam County Junior Livestock Show and the Houston Fat Stock Show. He is the son of Mr and Mrs J Kirk.
Members of the junior class at Yee High School will present a three act comedy in the school auditorium on Friday evening February 22. The title is It Am A Family Crisis. Leading roles to be announced later.
Cameron public schools PTA members gathered February 7 in the Industrial Arts Building to stress Educational Opportunity Proved For Our Children. Bob White demonstrated hands on industrial arts projects while plans were set for a Teen-Age Canteen as a PTA fundraiser.
