Milam County Farm Bureau Sets Sixth Anniversary

Milam County Farm Bureau marks its sixth anniversary with a Farm Bureau Day at Simon George Memorial Hall in Cameron on Thursday February 18. The program begins at 10 a.m. with President John A. Smith presiding and County Judge Charles C. Smith Jr delivering an address on a rural roads program. The day includes practical school participation, a noon basket dinner, and an afternoon of Farm Bureau service department speakers plus a Swine Program drawing for Milam County youth. The event ends around 4 p.m.

Red Cross Campaign To Memorialize Jamie Clark of San Gabriel

Milam County Red Cross sets a March memorial campaign in honor of Jamie Clark of San Gabriel a longtime volunteer. Board chairman Jack W. Prescott says the 1954 drive will raise Red Cross members and funds across Milam County with Rev. Burton Smith of Rockdale as county campaign chairman guiding plans and community chairmen.

Mrs. B. H. Meyer 91 Dies in Westphalia Rites Held

Mrs. B. H. Meyer age 91 the oldest Westphalia resident died Wednesday night at her daughter’s home in Westphalia. Funeral services were held Friday at 9 a.m. at the Church of the Visitation with Rt. Rev. R. P. Schertz officiating. Survivors include two sons Henry and Herman Meyer both of Westphalia and four daughters Mary Miekamp Annie Johnson J G Gamsemier and Mrs. Wusch. Nicholson funeral home of Rosebud assisted. She was an aunt of Mrs. John Karnowski of Cameron.

Funeral Services Held Sunday For Mrs Ed Harris

Funeral services were held Sunday February 7 at Marek Burns Chapel for Mrs Ed Harris 68 with Rev Aubrey F Russell officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery. She died Saturday in Austin and was a former Cameron resident. Survivors include four daughters nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren two sisters and one brother.

Young Cameron boy seizes 250-pound Black Angus at jail Fat Stock Show

Roy Wayne Lindsey, 12, son of Bruce and the Cameron family, wrestled a 250-pound Black Angus steer during the Houston Fat Stock Show Calf Scramble. He celebrated shouting I got a calf as he crossed the finish line. Lindsey attends Maysfield school under Milam County Agriculture Agent J. D. Moore with several Milam County entrants.

Health Unit Reports Influenza Cases in Milam County

Milam County Health Unit doctor Dr. John B. Bryson announced last week’s figures: 215 influenza cases, four pneumonia, 34 measles, eight streptococcal throat, inc scarlet fever, one gonorrhea, one shigellosis, and one chicken pox case. The week spanned January 31 to February 5.

Five Holidays For 1954 Chosen By Cameron Business Men

Cameron Chamber of Commerce polls Cameron business men to pick five holidays for 1954. The selected days include July 5 observance of the 4th of July, Thanksgiving, Armistice Day, Christmas December 25, and New Year’s Day 1955. Lincoln’s and Washington’s Birthdays Memorial Day Labor Day and San Jacinto Day were rejected.

Baptist Workers Conference Held Friday Night in Milam County

Baptist churches in Milam County gather at Little River Baptist Church Friday evening February 12 for the Monthly Workers Conference. Rev. Aubrey F. Russell presides. The program includes Adult Training Union demonstrations and testimonials by Cameron First Baptist and other local unions. Milam County Youth Calves Stand Out at Houston Stock Show

Milam County entries earned several placings at the Houston Fat Stock Show. Rex McClaren of Marlow and Carroll Wayne Jungmann of Buckholts won Beef Scramble calves, with McClaren placing fourth in Beef Division Shorthorn. Roy Wayne Lindsey of Cameron led the calf scramble with a 250 pound steer. J. D. Moore, Milam County agricultural agent, accompanied by the students' teachers, directed the trip.

The Milam County Farm Bureau Board of Directors met in its office with President John A. Smith Jr. in charge. Harold Moore area sales supervisor spoke on service features. Lenora Bickett presented the 1954 budget. Mary Ann Swanzy and Alice Marie Ottmer won chicken awards totaling 15 dollars to be presented February 18. a combined swine program is planned for this year.

Cold weather boosts Cameron gas use by 38 percent

Highway bids to open for Milam FM 485 project

The State Highway Department will open bids for about 611 miles of highway work on February 16 and 17. The Milam County FM 485 project covers 7.102 miles from Buckhous to Yarrelston and includes grading base and surfacing. Bid openings occur in Austin at 9 a.m. Feb. 17.

City issues January building permits total $7,100

In January the city issued three building permits totaling 7100, per city secretary Neo mi Needham. The 1954 January total trails 1953, which had two permits totaling 9300. Named permit holders include Walter Wallace for repairs 600 Woodson Lumber Co for a warehouse 1500 and W M Price for a 5000 home construction permit.

Mrs. Oscar Smith Dies at 59 in String Prairie

Mrs. Oscar Smith 59 of String Prairie died Sunday at Rosebud Hospital after six years of ill health. Survived by her husband Oscar Smith four daughters two sisters a brother and a mother. Funeral Tuesday at 10 a m at Green Funeral Home Cameron with burial in String Prairie Cemetery. Pallbearers named.

National Guard Battery to Receive Army M 19 Tank

Lloyd Albertson Battery C of the 649th Anti aircraft Artillery Battalion will soon get an M 19 twin 40 mm gun light tank for training. The tank weighs nine tons and marks the Army’s newest anti aircraft vehicle used in Korea. Fort Bliss refresher courses for gun crews run April 1–17 and May 27–June 14 with transport and full Army pay provided.
