Milam County Native Sgt Harry Rummel Serves in Canada

Milam County native Harry Rummel has enlisted in the United States Army and serves as a radio operator in the signal corps. He joined on October 7, 1940, before the Selective Service Act, rose to sergeant, and is stationed in Canada after early training at Fort Sam Houston, in Louisiana, and North Carolina. He is 27, son of Mr and Mrs John Rummel, born and reared in Milam County.

Funeral Services for Mrs L B Martin

Funeral services for Mrs. L. B. Martin age 52 were held at St. Michael's church in Burlington after she died February 9 1943. Interment may be postponed if her son L B Martin Jr in the army cannot reach by 10 a m. Survived by husband two daughters one son and three sisters and three brothers.

Mrs Jerry Perkins longtime Mi lam county pioneer and widow of Jerry Perkins died Wednesday afternoon in the home of her daughter Mrs Watt Henderson in Palestine She was mother to J C Perkins a former Texas ranger and Elza Perkins also a Texas ranger and to Mrs Watt Henderson She survived by one daughter funeral services were held at 3 pm at the First Christian church in Cameron and burial will be in the North Elm cemetery where her husband is buried

The body of Sgt. Alex Baker is expected in Cameron Friday after he died near Seattle on February 3 1943. The Coast Artillery sergeant leaves fiance Miss Jeanne Perrodin and is survived by his parents siblings and a brother in the Marines. Funeral plans by Green Funeral Home may be held Friday at 3 p m if the body arrives in time.

Local Man Joins Raiders After Yee High Graduation

Pvt. James T. Shuemate of Cameron, a Yee High School class of ’42 graduate, joined the Marines a week after graduation. He trained at San Diego and Tongue Point before volunteering for the Raiders at Camp Pendleton, and, at 17, awaits active service as he nears his 18th birthday.

Marvin Mode Killed in South Pacific

Marvin Mode aged 17, son of Mr and Mrs Oslie Mode of Burden ton, was killed in action in the South Pacific. A War Department telegram to his parents confirmed the death. He enlisted in the Marines at 16 and had recently written from an island in the South Pacific. Surviving are his parents two brothers and four sisters.

A. H. Akers, owner along the Little River bridge path, asks $6000 for damages to his home rather than $600 per acre for land. He claims road height raises 6 feet and banks out front, reducing property value. Grady Stidham says total 12 acres involved, no height increase, just banked slope with a curve per engineers. Tuberculosis Clinic Held Here Two Days

Sixty seven persons found to be infected with tuberculosis were treated here on Monday and Tuesday at a clinic operated by the State Health Department in conjunction with the local health unit. Miss Melinda Hill county health nurse said the clinic will be held twice yearly in February and July. On Wednesday the clinic was held in Robertson county under Miss Duff Martin directing. Dr. T. E. Crump heads Public Health Service for Milam and Robertson counties, with the clinic aided by physicians in the counties. Persons infected are placed in the State Sanatorium.

With Quartermaster Cpl Wendel Cryer serving since his Sept 10 1942 enlistment he is in the Quartermaster Corps and now holds the rank of Corporal. A truck driver trained at Camp Lee Va he has time at Camp Claiborne La and Camp Shelby Miss his current address unknown. He is 21 the son of Mr and Mrs J A Cryer of Cameron and a Rogers High School graduate class of 1940.

Funeral services for Mrs W K Clement were held at 1 50 p m at Salty with burial in the Clement plot near Thorndale. She was 71, daughter of the late Judge W L Davidson and widow of W K Clement pioneer Milam County lawyer. Services were held in Austin on Monday.

First American Soldier Landed in Ireland Wounded

Private Tucker, a 1942 draftee from Camerorite, entered service February 1942. He trained at Camp Hood in Texas before sailing to Ireland within months, where he sustained critical wounds. He later returned as a casual and hopes to be home soon.
