Charles Stanford Receives 35-Year Prison Term

A jury convicted Charles Stanford of murder in the December 24 slaying near Rockdale. He showed no emotion as the verdict was read, flanked by his father M. N. Stanford and three sisters. A divorce suit by his wife preceded the shooting after an alleged attempt to reconcile. A rehearing motion was filed citing indictment, lack of malice, and prosecutors’ remarks about spousal testimony.

Hunger Dazed Man Cared for By City Government Hero

J. F. Roberts, 44, from the Ozark Mountains, was found dazed Saturday between Milano and Rockdale unable to walk. A Cameron physician said he suffered starvation and a sprained back from an effort to roll a log for a fire. City officers are caring for him.

Dress Making Winners Named In Eighth Grade Contest

Awards made in a school dress making competition for the Eighth Grade Home Economics Class. For appearance first Vir ginia Burnett, second Evelyn Dickens, third Alice Strizner. For workmanship first Thelma Rae Griffin, second Alice Striznek, third Evelyn Dickens. Honorable mentions went to Mary Min Reese Lorraine Dodson Clara Schiller Carolyn Porter Aline Stuessel. 48 dresses entered.

Power Company Holds Safety Meeting Here

The 8-C Cameron District of the Texas Louisiana Power Company held its monthly safety meeting and annual election of officers at the Cameron office on Thursday January 26. P. G. Summers of McGregor will serve as Chairman for the coming year and Mrs Gladys Watson was chosen Secretary and Director of the First Aid Work.

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo Signed to End War

On this day eighty five years ago the peace treaty ending the US Mexico war was signed at Guadalupe Hidalgo. The accord established the terms of settlement and boundary realignments between the two nations.

Heart of Texas Council held its annual meeting at the Kyle Hotel in Temple on January 26. F C Barrett of Waco and Rev J P Love of Cameron received the Silver Beaver Award. J R Nalley of Waco presented the honors amid speeches as the council outlined 1933 goals and progress. Over a hundred attendees from fifteen towns joined the event.

Davis 67 Dies At Olney After Milam County Life

J C Davis aged 67 a Milam county native and Cameron resident died at his son Rays Olney home on Saturday January 28. Funeral held Sunday at 3 pm at Cameron Methodist church with Rev J C Buttrill. burial at Oak Hill Cemetery beside his former wife. Survived by wife and several children. Cameron Band Heads to State Contest in Mexia

Cameron Municipal School Band with 35 members will enter the state contest at Mexia in April. Director Francis Cox is conducting rehearsals for the event. A concert tour of neighboring cities is planned for this spring.

Grover H. Albert reports Milam county cotton ginned for the period ending January 16 shows 39 448 bales from the 1982 crop versus 69 371 bales from the 1931 crop, reflecting marked gains in efficiency or volume.

Dr W R Newton In Cameron Home Ill After Heart Attack

Dr W R Newton lay critically ill at his Cameron home after a heart attack on Wednesday following a two week illness. He showed slight improvement on Thursday morning as Cameron doctors stayed in constant contact with the sick room and friends awaited word on his condition. Indications suggested he would soon be on the road to recovery.

Last Survivor of Milam County Hood’s Brigade Dies at 95

Sam Bellah, long resident of Bernard after Cameron, died at his home December 22 at age 95. A veteran of Hood’s Texas Brigade Company G, 5th Hood’s Brigade, he fought in Virginia battles and was the last Milam County member to wear the Gray. He leaves several grown children across the state and was connected by marriage to Mrs Martha Rogers, widow of Major J C Rogers.

Milam County objects to new district lines in Austin

Milam County residents protested pending Austin bills that would redraw congressional and senatorial districts. Milam would move from the Sixth to the Eleventh District with Milam, Bell, and others. a new Senate group would place Milam with Brazos, Washington, Burleson, Lee, and Robertson. A bill also targets abolishing Cameron District Court, shifting it to Falls County with Marlin, as economy drives consolidation.
