Plans for the annual Yeomen football banquet outline honors for the squad and coaches. Coach Paul Smith confirms the event, sponsored by the Rotary and Lions Clubs, with the entire team invited as honored guests at Simon George Memorial Hall on December 18 at 7:00 PM. Tickets are available.
The County Council of the Womens Home Demonstration Clubs marks its fifteenth anniversary with a 3:00 P.M. program at Lights Chapel Baptist Church on Sunday December 16. Founding president Victoria Twiggs and early member Enora N. Dykes will present the history, with music by home demonstration women and 4-H girls. Demonstrators Sophia Johnson C I Goins and Ida Mae Johnson speak on their achievements. ministers, leaders, and Hazel Burks appear. Myrtle Kelley will be pianist. six 4-H girls Christine Williams Davilla Barbra Walker Willie Jean Gentry Emma Jean Phillips Billie Maud Nelson Madeen Hoyle receive awards. leaders with ten and fifteen years of service are also recognized. Public invited.
Thomas Harrison son of Mrs. Alma Houston is home on leave from the Navy. He volunteered for service in March 1951 and was stationed in San Diego before transfer to U S Naval Hospital Bainbridge Maryland where he has been for six months. He will report back to duty after his leave. He formerly worked at The Herald office. Friends are glad he is home for a few days and he plans to leave Friday December 14.
Lee Jones of Lubbock, father of Mrs. W. T. Hanes of Cameron, is seriously ill. Mr. and Mrs. Hanes were at his bedside over the weekend and his condition remains unchanged. Friends express deep concern while hoping for an encouraging report. Mrs. Hanes teaches at Ada Henderson School.
A Baylor University collision near McGregor Sunday night killed Nickie Kajita, a Kokura native doing graduate work. Injured include Mary Neil McClellen and Baylor students Herb Zimmerman Albert Baird Helen Jordan Nelman Gilbreath Roy Dean Welch, Pfe Hermann Hudgins of Fort Hood, with Miss Kajita formerly aiding Baptist Missionary College in Kokura.
Mary Hardin Baylor College editor of The Bells, a junior journalism major, selected for Theta Sigma Phi membership. Eligibility requires outstanding journalism work and at least a B average. she is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Lester Turner of Cameron.
The 1951 Yoemen football letter awards will be announced at the annual banquet in Simon-George Memorial Hall on Tuesday December 18. Peppy Blount a former Texas University star will be the main speaker and district trophies will be presented by J C Barnes. Rev Jim McKeown serves as master of ceremonies with Lions Rotary Club organizers assisting.
Sister Costka head nurse says St Edward Hospital is adding a modern emergency room and an upgraded X-Ray suite on the north side of the entrance. A fourth room is being built on the south end though its use is undecided. Completion is expected in two to three weeks if weather holds.
W L McIntosh has bought the combined interests of the Cheeves estate and Mrs. Frank Cheeves in Cheeves Brothers Dry Goods. The firm, dating to the 1890s, will be renamed McIntosh's with a storewide price reduction and continued top brand merchandise.
Construction on the municipal building began this week with concrete foundation pouring starting Friday and finishing Saturday. Thompson Construction of Rockdale holds the contract and will proceed as conditions allow under city secretary Neomi Needham. Architect J. A. Pitzinger of Dallas oversees the project, also handling the Bueckholts School.
Induction call No. 20 issued by Milam County Draft Board No. 92 names six men to depart January 22 by bus to the Dallas induction center for a January 23 draft. This marks the 17th Milam County call since Korea began, with about 180 men drafted from the county.
Cameron Public Schools announce Christmas holidays from December 21 to January 2. Principal S. M. Layfield notes classes will hold parties before closing. faculty and students will have an eleven day break, with many traveling to visit families. The break is the longest of the term.
About fifteen hundred attendees filled Yee High School Gym Tuesday for the annual carnival. Principal S M Layfield reported over 500 dollars raised, noting illness kept some students away. Dorcas Haynes won the Touchdown Football trophy, later auctioned to Yeomen back Glenn Rosenberg. Becky Gohmert was crowned Ada Henderson School queen with escort Marshal Caraway. Funds support the school activity fund.
J C Wallace longtime Minerva oilman and former Crazy Crystal Plant manager died at St Edward Hospital after a four week illness. He came to Milam County as a youth, married Willie Cone in 1897, and is survived by a widow, three sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held December 12 at Grace Methodist Church Hearne with interment at Rockdale Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Batton Smith of Temple visited relatives here Sunday.
Sgt Wesley Braden son of Mr and Mrs W E Braden of Marlow is home after 22 months overseas with the Air Force He volunteered in July 1949 and was stationed at Lackland AFB before transfer to Lowrey AFB near Denver He was recently promoted to sergeant He saw duty in Japan the Philippines and Hawaii He graduated from Yee High School in May 1949 where he played football Two months furlough then stationed at Connally AFB in Waco
Nathan Adams of Dallas, dean of Texas bankers and state Defense Bond chairman for a decade, predicts banks in Texas will sell about 5 million dollars of Defense Bonds in December. He notes that roughly one third of December sales will be used as Christmas presents or year end bonuses, despite banks not being usual Santa headquarters.
Agtex Karmore Ormaby Echo Maid, a Friesian Holstein owned by Texas A&M College, College Station, tops Texas Holstein records. The cow milks twice daily in the Ten Months Division, producing 577 pounds of butterfat from 16 010 pounds of milk, with selection emphasizing reproductive traits as well as production.
L Van Perkins, business man and Central Texas supervisor for Fidelity Union Life Insurance Co, is reported improving after surgery at Scott and White Hospital Temple. He had been a patient in recent weeks and will likely be home within a week.
Milam County Red Cross Volunteer Service Chairman Grady Stidham appeals for man sized gifts for patients at Fort Hood and McCloskey Hospitals. Items include T shirts underwear stationery pens candy and fruit cake plus Western and comic books. Gifts may be left with Mrs. Stidham 822 North Houston Street or by calling 321. Tree decorations are also requested for hospital Christmas trees.
Cameron Yeomen place four on district squad led by back Genn Rosenberg and MVP Lankford. Georgetown Eagles add four selections with Day, Moehring, and Witrich, while Taylor Mucks and Rosebud also place players on the first and second teams.
At a Knights of Pythias meeting Jerry Schiller R L Terry and Jim Miller received the Rank of Page. Leland Green Sr was awarded a 25 year Veteran's Jewel. Absent for the honors were Glenn H Flinn and Gaston Barmore, with more pages to be conferred at the next meeting.
Mr and Mrs L G Hayes and their sons Skeets and Joe from Waco were guests in the home of Mrs Leana Walton and her daughters for the past week.
