City Council Debates Dust Control and Street Upgrades in Cameron

Cameron city councilors split two to three on key measures at city hall Tuesday night. Weems proposed asphalt for one street to curb dust, with a cost of about five and one half cents per square foot, while Andres opposed unless homeowners funded it. others considered expanding if the project proved successful. The body also set a blinker at Fannin and Highway 36 and approved a new truck bid, discussed water supply and a potential filtering plant, and approved a free weekly garbage pickup option amid debate over mandatory service.

Mrs. B. F. Cone Dies After Weeks Ill at 73

Mrs. B F Cone 73 died Saturday after a several week illness at her daughter’s home in Cameron. Services were held Sunday at Greens Funeral Home with Rev. Mark C. Magers officiating. She leaves three daughters Mrs Cole Cameron, Mrs Clark Dickinson, Mrs Schultz Dickinson, two brothers, two sisters, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Interment in Winston Cemetery near Minerva.

Oil Men Take Action in Milam County Wells

Oil men in Milam County plan active drilling as A. E. Baer of Beaumont takes over Neal McDowell No. 1 S. R. Fuller wild cat eight miles northwest of Cameron. The test drilled to 600 feet, repermitted to 4000 feet, on a 34.6 acre Francisco de los Rios Survey lease, location 330 feet from the north and southeast lines.

Mollie Schreiber Dies Sunday At Mexia Burial Here

Mollie Schreiber 62 died Sunday in Mexia Texas where she had lived. Funeral services were set for 3 p m Monday at St Monicas Church with Rev George J Duda officiating. Burial in St Monicas Cemetery. Survivors include six siblings and six named pallbearers.

Prize Set For Best Jaycee Yule Home Display

The Junior Chamber of Commerce offers prizes for Cameron home decorations with a $25 savings bond first prize, $15 cash second, $10 third, and two $5 honorable mentions. Judges from Rockdale will tour the city Monday night, December 20, evaluating originality, workmanship, arrangement, lighting and color. Charles M Goodnight 84 died at his Houston home on Sunday December 4. Funeral services were held Monday at Wilkinson and Hatch chapel with Rev T S Ogle officiating. The Milam County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee announces referendum committees for the December 14 cotton marketing quota vote. Ben Milam School held a formal opening December 5 with about 300 attendees. State Education Commissioner Dr. J. W. Edgar spoke on public school centennial progress while praising the district’s facilities, including the new Ben Milam building.

Lions Honor Football Squad With January Banquet

Lions Club members met at the First Christian Church basement for their weekly luncheon. Reverend Jim McKeown urged gradual desegregation in the south and prepared minds for action. The club planned a January banquet for the football squad and scheduled a Lions picture show at Cameron theatre. Merlin Lester leads next week program.

Mrs Richter Visits Buckholts Family in Cameron

Milam County TB Association Formed to Benefit local TB relief

Milam County organized a tuberculosis association to receive 82 percent of Christmas seal sales for local education and relief in 1955. Tuberculosis Board of Directors led by Hinton Pruett urged donors who received seals from the State Association to send contributions, with 50 percent returned to Milam for local use. Next year the group will issue its own seals and retain 82 percent of collections.

Abandoned Highway 190 Section Put Under State Maintenance

A Cameron delegation led by County Judge Charles C. Smith Jr. won state approval to maintain an abandoned portion of Highway 190 as a Farm to Market route. The Milam County petition, signed by 423 residents, sought rehabilitation and state maintenance under the Colson Brisco Law. City permits fall in Cameron during November

Cameron City Hall issued few building permits in November with three totaling 1575 for enlarging and repair and two totaling 10000 for new structures. One ongoing project is a Coca Cola Bottling Company warehouse on Crockett Street, 80 by 60 feet, prefabricated aluminum, groundwork finished and target completion December 15. The facility will mainly support truck loading and unloading.

County Real Estate Dealers Plan Milam County Meeting

Officers of the State Real Estate Dealers Association of Texas will meet Milam County dealers Friday at 8 p m in Rockdale Flower Shop to organize a county board. The aim is to regulate actions, aid the public and dealers, and unite licensees under the state body. Attendees from Cameron include C W Hinyard, Mrs Atkinson, Jack Tomlinson, and others.
