Teachers Endorse Gilmer Aiken Report in Texas
The Texas State Teachers Association backs a plan to abolish all local common school districts in favor of a county board system removing the County Superintendent. Milam County educators have welcomed the proposal and a Cameron meeting launched a county wide committee to push details. If enacted, busing to centralized schools would begin and the county would run about four schools.

The plan would create five regional book centers with bookmobiles in year one, followed by five more centers, expanding access to hundreds of bookless counties and towns. The move ties to possible Hill-Aiken-Jenkens federal aid and would require state matching funds.
