Pilot Cadet Bobby Hays Qualifies At Lafayette College

Cadet Robert S. Hays former Schreiner Institute student and Texas grid star is at Lafayette College Easton Pennsylvania completing courses in special military service and has qualified for pilot training in the Army Air Corps. The 19 year old Cameron native played half back for Yee High School, volunteered for service as a student, trained at Nashville and Wichita Falls, and is one of a hundred cadets sent to Lafayette College for advanced training. His father J R Hays is postmaster and his mother survives.

Cameron Gives 3500 To Nation War Chest

Albert Collins, chairman of Cameron War Chest drive, reported the city contributed 3500 to the national campaign and raised a total of 6400 to meet its chest quota. Community Chest operators pledged 3506 and will have funds left for local needs. Collins praised workers and co operation, noting publication of workers’ names next week and commending residence-area efforts led by Mrs. W O Triggs.

McCall Completes Pre-Flight Training in Cameron to Dallas

Flight student Clarence D. McCall of Cameron has finished three months of physical conditioning and ground school at U S Navy Pre Flight School in Cameron and is ordered to Naval Air Station in Dallas for progressive flight training before joining a combat unit. He enlisted in January 1941 and transferred from the CAA War Training Service School in Conway Arkansas. Meanwhile Lt. Hogan based at Aberdeen Proving Grounds arrives in Cameron with his wife Billie Gaither Hogan for ten days with relatives in Cameron and Rockdale.

Thomas Little Dies in Houston Friday

Thomas Little died suddenly of a heart attack at his Houston home on Friday December 4 1943 at 1 p m He was a former Buckholts resident with many old time friends here Six weeks earlier his son Grady Little had also died of a heart attack in Cameron Funeral services were held Sunday at Teague with interment at the family homestead Surviving children are Jesse Little Lawn Texas Mrs C W Debo San Angelo and Mrs Delbert Rich Temple

No Deadlines for Mailing Christmas Packages to Soldiers

Postmaster J. R. Hays clarified that there is no expiration date for mailing Christmas packages to U S service members. He stated packages may be sent at any time and as late as December 24 or later, dispelling belief that December 10 was the deadline and noting confusion over overseas mailing deadlines.

Old Age Assistance Grants Increased and Revised in December

Austin announces a 20 cent boost to Old Age Assistance starting with December checks. The average grant rises to 20.95 dollars from November, with 180,511 aged recipients and 3.78 million distributed. Blind rolls show slight gains. dependent children aid falls by 28 percent across 10,589 families and 23,006 children.

Pfc. John Milton Bross, 23, a Cameron resident and Austin native, volunteered in June 1941 and served in North Africa Sicily and Italy. He has been missing in action since September 14 1943 in the African theater of war, with the family notified of the status. He last was heard from in Sicily.

Spirit of Cameron Fortress Bomber Named in War Bond Drive

The Spirit of Cameron fortress bomber, purchased with War Bonds in Cameron during the April 1945 drive, was released to newspapers with photos by Emory B. Camp, director of the drive. A similar craft was named for Rockdale and two fighters were bought for Bueckholts and Thorndale. Mr. Camp also announced a Fortess titled the Spirit of Milam.

Farm Deal for 1944 Calls for More

The Agricultural Adjustment Agency announces the 1944 program led by A L Freeman of Mi lam county. It urges increased food and feed crop production to support the war effort while balancing output and preserving soil. The plan envisions record crops, shifts to soybeans and canning crops, a meat industry expansion, and no planting restrictions or crop penalties for 1944.

Glass The Florist Moves to 19 New Home

Glass the Florist has relocated to new quarters on North Travis Street in Cameron, enlarging facilities and planning a formal opening. The former mansion known as the old Streetman home now houses the business after being purchased from Mrs. M. C. Sapp. The move follows years of operation on the Eggert property near the schools.

Navy boatsman J L Horton recalls Pearl Harbor

J L Horton, a 25 year old boatsman first class, served six years in the Navy and was at Pearl Harbor during the December 7 1941 attack. He enlisted September 9 1937, is the son of Mr and Mrs J J Horton of Tracy and attended Sharp High School. His younger brother is in navy training at Corpus Christi. Details of his Pacific War experiences await censorship removal.

County War Chest Final Report Shows $10,077.48 Local Gift

Final tabulation reveals the county contributed $10,077.48 to the Nation's War Chest. A. W. McCullin, campaign director, lists each community with its quota and amount raised. Cameron led with $5,500 contributed toward local and community chest needs. Albert Collins announced Cameron's total and the plan to publish more figures soon.

Navy Recruiting Drive At Local Post Office

The Post Office Representative will recruit stenographers typists clerks and auditing clerks for vacancies created by promotions and armed services. Selected applicants travel to Washington DC at government expense to work for the Navy with government dormitories cafeterias gymnasiums and recreation programs available for about 24 dollars a month single rooms or 16 50 for doubles. Applicants must be 17 1 2 or older with no maximum age.

Governor Stevenson Visits Cameron to Meet Granddaughter Georgia Gills

Gov Coke R Stevenson of Austin traveled to Cameron Tuesday to visit Judge and Mrs Graham Gillis. He met their new granddaughter Georgia Gills, daughter of Capt and Mrs Billie Gillis, who are visiting in the Gillis home. Billie Gillis formerly Miss Leonore Riley and served as secretary to Stevenson when he was lieutenant governor.
