A St Louis paper reports the U S Post Office ZIP code system improved delivery speed since July 1953. A Globe-Democrat test mailed letters with and without ZIPs to regional and national points, noting most first mailings arrived together though some variation.
Cameron Rotarians heard Lloyd Lamoure outline Milam County surplus food protections and federal funds. He cited about 1 million dollars in Social Security retirement and aid to dependent children plus 720 thousand in veterans funds annually, noting 2,400 residents on the program and 3,499 receiving commodities in a single month. The speaker described the county as a welfare county with a four million dollar impact.
The Cameron Women’s Bowling Association will hold its annual city tournament at Cameron Bowling Lanes at 7 p.m. on December 8. All members are urged to attend.
McLerran, a Cameron native and former Ideco engineer, is promoted to Deputy Chief to supervise Brown & Root in Project Mohole. The goal is to drill through the earth’s crust to the mantle, with core sampling from deep ocean basins and a platform built by National Steel and Shipbuilding. The project aims for a tentative drilling site about 100 miles north northeast of Maui in the Hawaiian Islands.
Robert A. Swanzy of Cameron has been named District Deputy Grand Master for Masonic District No 104 in Texas. The appointment by Grand Master H W Fullinim follows the 130th Annual Communication in December. Swanzy, a Lone Star Gas employee and past master of San Andres Lodge 170, is active in multiple Masonic bodies and attends the Tracy Methodist Church.
Honor Roll list for Ada Henderson Junior High covers October 11 to November 1. Grade 6 students include Deborah Brashear Venessa Gleser Melissa Houston Steven Kirk Del Jean Senkel Arthur Gary Brantley Jennifer Kostrom Cynthia Krieg Harry Perrin Donna Tindall Norman Trubee. Grade 7 names are Annie Lesikar hall Perrin Mahalia Petty.
A residence at 810 West 8th Street burned on Wednesday afternoon causing about 1090 dollars in loss. The origin of the fire could not be determined immediately. The house was owned by Mrs. M. A. Jackson and occupied by Edgar Bevens.
Cameron City Council grants a franchise to Construction Co of Bryan for cable work to commence after the second and final reading next Tuesday. SM Construction Co and B L Moseby Co of Houston sought franchises. a lapse of a Moseby franchise was canceled. Off air service proposals include piping network programming directly to customers from Fort Worth Dallas stations.
Remodeling of buildings in the West Block at South Houston continues this week. Upon completion the block will house Andersen LV Cameron Retail Credit Western Auto Schigut's New Cameron Pharmacy and Bernice's Dress Shop in their present locations.
Santa arrives in Cameron for the annual Christmas parade at 4 pm Saturday December 4. Bands floats and units travel downtown with a parade theme A Saviour Is Born. Winners announced at 4 59 pm on courthouse square with entries from multiple churches groups and local firms.
Cameron Jaycees began restoring used toys Tuesday night to supply about 200 local children for Christmas. Sessions run Tuesday and Thursday with donations accepted at Joe M Houston across from the post office and Cameron Lumber Company. Toys in need include wagons bicycles dolls and pull toys.

Local men and their families are named, including Capt Joe Rex McClaren, Capt Ed Flinn, Maj James Moriarty, and multiple Marines and Navy personnel serving in Nha Trang Saigon Da Nang and the South China Sea with the 1st Cavalry Division and other units.
