Prairie sod houses tell the story of prairie life and energy
Prairie settlers built sod houses or soddy shacks from turf blocks called prairie marble. From 1870 to 1910 over a million dotted the plains from Texas to Canada. Walls were two feet thick. roofs of willow and sod leaked mud in rain. sod houses cooled in summer and withstood fires, but often collapsed after years.
