Steamboat Navigates Little River in Texas History
The 1850 51 effort led by McCown and captain Basil M Hatfield used the ship Washington to ascend Little River toward Cameron. Crowds cheered as the steamer was halted by shoals near two and a half miles from Cameron with feasting on deck before turning downstream to the Brazos. This marked the first and last attempt to navigate the upper Brazos and Little River.

Milam County Education Then and Now in Cameron and Beyond
Milam County’s early schools featured the Milam Liberal Institute in Cameron founded under a 1848 act, plus the Port Sullivan Male and Female College and Davilla Institute. Census and tax figures trace growth from 1850 to 1860, while Reconstruction and district shifts shaped public schooling, including Cameron’s Negro and white schools, district creation in 1905, and postwar population declines.
