Senator Praises Estate Tax Exemption Increase Action

Senator Lloyd Bentsen welcomed Senate passage of changes raising the inheritance tax exemption to 200000 for farmers ranchers and small businessmen in Texas He proposed raising the exemption from 60000 to 200000 and noted the bill couples a 30000 credit growing to 50000 by 1981 He warned that a 60000 exemption forces many widows and children to sell farms to pay taxes and urged final congressional approval plus a ban on inflated land valuations. Directors of the Youth Exposition Building Association set a Monday meeting for August 23 at 8 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce rooms and urged attendance.

Nurse Becomes Pilot In First Women Training Program

Captain Connie Engel 26 of Cameron joins Lackland AFB flight screening as one of 20 women in the first pilot training program for female officers. She holds a UT nursing degree 1971 and will advance to 49 weeks of jet pilot training at Williams AFB after Lackland. Engel plans to return to nursing later and provide medical guidance for women pilots.

Two Rockdale men shot in separate incidents

Scott Manson of Austin was wounded multiple times by a .22 revolver in a Monday shooting on East Second Street and rammed a house after. His wife was arrested on weapons charges. Fritz Dornhoffer, 81, is in critical condition after an accidental self inflicted head wound while firing at an armadillo near Rockdale.

Sen Bentsen To Address Cameron Lions and Rotary Club

City Seeks Speed Limit Reduction On Main Highways

Cameron Police Chief Kent Butler urged lowering the city speed limit from 50 to 30 mph on Highways 36 and 77 inside Cameron to curb accidents near businesses and school crossings. The change requires Texas Highway Department approval.
