R W Crosswye the Sour Lake postmaster and Milam county surveyor spent last week in Cameron renewing old friendships and acquaintances with longtime associates.
B F Bonds, assistant cashier at First National Bank of Cameron, bought the half interest of John M Tucker in the Tucker and Tyson cold drink business and becomes co manager with Dan Tyson. Plans for interior improvements aim to make the parlor one of the area’s most attractive. Bonds, formerly in Thorndale banking, is well known countywide. Tucker retires after many years.
A Cameron Herald visit reveals the Cameron Compress plant with 50 000 plus bales annual capacity, eight thousand bale storage, and modern design. The facility boosts Milam county farming by processing cotton for export through Santa Fe to Java, illustrating Cameron’s industrial importance and its effect on regional trade.
The Yoemen, a 24 man squad coached by L Van Perkins, begin training August 27. Key players include Joe Hefley captain-elect Gillis Graham Edwin Thompson and Glenn Flinn. Additional prospects from surrounding territory bolster the defense and offense as Cameron fans back the season. The schedule includes Calvert Hearne Groesbeck and Rockdale.
Judge W C Davis of Bryan newly appointed chief justice of the Texas Court of Civil Appeals in Waco delivered an address at the Baptist church on Sunday. He urged service as the greatest Christian attribute, citing Florence Nightingale Madam Curie and a country doctor whose sacrifice marked the lesson. The event drew a large crowd and was hailed a success.
The Hubert Hefley Motor Company sold 25 Ford automobiles in August. A car load of Fords was unloaded last Saturday and by Monday the last car was sold. The dealer receives shipments almost weekly and expects to meet fall demand for cars.
More than 400 people from Salty neighborhood and nearby towns gathered for a Salty District Singing Convention on the home grounds. Key leaders including Preson Trickins helped organize the event, with a vote to hold the next session at Salty Methodist church in November and possible future meetings in Cameron in February or early summer. Cameron attendees listed include Judge John Watson, Judge Teff T. Kemp, W. A. Bonds, H. M. Roark, J. O. Hughes, and J. R. B.
Mrs Jessie Dawson Holtzclaw and her young daughter visited Mr and Mrs J F Holtzclaw in Brenham this week sharing time with the family and their hosts.
The city completes a concrete underground drainage channel costing over 13000 dollars, laid by J L Barmore to collect runoff from a large adjoining area. It replaces an old drainage ditch and drains to a concrete bridge near the T A Howell property. A gravel driveway is built at the park edge with trees to follow.
Rev R C White, pastor of the Cameron church, has returned from a month’s rest in Asheville North Carolina and will preach at eleven and eight o clock on Sunday. Church laymen have filled the pulpit in his absence with H M Roark O L Kidd and Judge W C Davis of Bryan assisting on Sundays.
Mi lam county Commissioners Court votes to call an election in September to issue 100000 for Road District No. 1 Cameron area to resurface the road from Ad Hall to McCown bridge. State and federal funds will add 125000, enabling a new two way Little River bridge and concrete viaducts in bottom lands. Road changes planned beyond river south side, total project cost about 305000.
The Milam county Baptist work council will convene in Cameron on Thursday August 3 with all county pastors expected to attend. The daylong session aims to advance council work and may include entertainment for visitors, with a general good meeting planned and N C Kennedy, secretary, coordinating the announcement.
J T Parma forecasts warmth for Cameron on Friday after a string of frigid conditions across the Midwest and South. Highest temps reported include Cureo 98, Galveston 86, Dallas 90, Cameron 89. Local thunder showers possible, highways passable, the Cameron-Houston via Hearne route now open after bridge closures.
Miss Dora Poteet of Dallas will play the organ at a program of classical music at the First Methodist church. She is assisted by Mesdames J. L. Clinton and A. J. Triggs and Miss Louise Adams. No admission will be charged. all who love music are urged to attend.
Cameron city council approves a sewage disposal plant plan and sends County Engineer A F Mitchell and C R Phillips to Austin to confer with the State Board of Health. Plans and specifications will accompany bids for construction to serve present and future needs, likely at the old gravel site. The project, praised as a major beneficial improvement, aims to meet stream pollution rules.
