The tax rate for Miler county in 1928 is set at 62 1 2 cents, unchanged from last year, while the state rate remains 75 cents. Combined county and state tax totals 1.37 1 2, with overall local, road, and school taxes around 3.50.
Elwood Atkinson stayed with his uncle in Maysfield last week, according to local notices.
Cotton receipts up to noon Thursday total 2534 bales with 1746 from By 2A. & A Pyey and 80 from Santa Fe R'y. City deliveries show ginned cotton hauled to the Cameron compress by truck and wagon. The Herald notes that bale counts take precedence for current news.
Information to the sheriff reports a Methodist minister, active in Old Mexico missionary work, was stoned by Mexicans during a revival near Meysfield and fled the scene. The San Antonio resident, named Onerdak, told friends in Cameron of the escape as the case is reviewed. Meanwhile Dobbins, a Cameron grocer, plans a new dry goods store in the Palmer Store building, with J. E. Collins heading the dry goods department.
Miss Bessie Dunham of Tracy accepts a position in the county clerk office under H. M. Roark. She replaces Mrs. H. H. Hartsfield and is noted as very efficient, with prior service in the office of County Judge W. G. Gillis.
A large Rockdale delegation appeared in county commissioners court to urge redrawing the line of road district No 10 to align with the Rockdale precinct and community.
News from Cameron reports a mammoth Invisible Empire demonstration and parade planned in Rockdale on August 30. It would be the twelfth Klan gathering in Milam county in six weeks and possibly the largest since Cameron's 1922 initiation. Shipments of Klansmen from across the county expected to attend.
Cameron plans a state of the art banking building featuring a horseshoe shaped lobby in gray tile, birch and white mahogany woodwork, and a two compartment vault with a ten thousand pound steel burglar proof door. The Accola heating system, modern fixtures by Mailander & Co., and a five ton Mosler time lock vault door arrive as contractors S. Sweigert of Waco and P. & Silbers of San Antonio complete interior work within two weeks.
Mesdames G. A. McHenry and C. E. Muller traveled from Dallas last Wednesday and spent several days visiting in the city. Their Cameron friends say such visits always give genuine pleasure.
A New York banking syndicate led by Seaboard National Bank and Goleman Sachs & Co arranged a large loan to the Texas Farm Bureau Cotton Association to market the state crop. Initial credit is 10 million with total loan expected at least 20 million, secured by Houston warehouse receipts and backed by graded cotton. The association serves 27 000 planters statewide and is expected to handle between 176 000 and 225 000 bales this year, with impacts on Milam county growers.
Homer Peel, famed as the "Silent Man" and crack outfielder of the Comet-Indiana East Texas team, was awarded a silver ball and bat by the club at Marshall Texas League. Jack Blalock presented the gift at the ballpark before the final game, with Henry Windt, local jeweler, noted as the donor in Dallas News coverage.
A thief broke into Wm Bathorn’s garage on Sunday night and took four coils for a Ford, weed chains and a tire pump. He also raided the chicken lot, taking several chickens. Bathorn appeals for the thief to spare others and share time more fairly if he must steal.
