Milam County OKs 9 Cent Tax to Fund 1957 58 Budget

Milam County Commissioners approved a 9 cent per 100 valuation general tax for the 1957 58 budget. The 352 370 estimated revenue funds road and bridge needs including right of way for US 77 from Minerva to the Lee County line. Expenditures are projected around 419 774 with salaries and new bond issues avoided. The rate applies starting October 1 1958.

Maize Harvest Reaches Peak in Milam County

Milam County reports peak maize production as Wilson Elevator and Milam Grain fill storage. Four million pounds handled by August 13 with about 100 cars stored and 45 shipped by Tuesday. Harvesting to continue this week while corn peaks. cotton ginns see early bailing as pickers await September start.

Austin Builder Wins Armory Construction Bid in Cameron

Camp Construction Company of Austin has been awarded a 98000 bid by the Texas National Guard Armory Board for a new 108 foot long armory building for Milam County Battery C 649th AAA Battalion in Cameron. The project includes concrete tile brick construction on a 20 acre site adjoining the current armory and a large gravel parking area for Guardsmen.

City Council Denies Cameron Telephone Rate Increase

Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. failed to gain a rate hike as Cameron officials rejected a $11 business line and higher rates for residences and multi party lines. Manager L Carson cited annual losses near $35,000 and discussed local and long distance revenue, dial system costs, and future investments. The council also approved attorney fees for a waterline dispute and denied a tax penalty dismissal request.

Watershed flood project voters eye Milam County

Polls open Saturday for San Gabriel River watershed residents in Milam County to approve a flood prevention plan. The federal program would fund 4 to 5 million dollars for three small dams. local share amounts to 150 000 dollars among 543 000 acres. Ballot asks district approval and five directors plus a 10 000 dollar bond. Candidates include J L Stewart HB Fox A C Weir D P Levine Henry Labaj and J W Hutto. five directors to be chosen from six.

Construction presses on two West Fourth St stations

Building continues on two filling stations on West Fourth Street this week. Mr and Mrs Jack Cammer are erecting a cement block structure opposite the new Safway store and will lease the operation to Sinclair Co for 15 years. The Magnolia station at West Fourth and US 77 SH 36 is nearing completion. The Sinclair station will feature four pumps. Contractor is Bert Joiner of San Antonio.

Ada Henderson YHS add four new teachers to staff

Four new instructors join Ada Henderson, Ben Milam and Yee High Schools led by Supt Wiley Loughriller. YHS hires include Mr Monroe for industrial arts and Mrs Wiedekker for commercial classes, plus Billy Joe Michalka as math instructor and Mrs WL McIntosh as English teacher.

McCullin to Receive Bachelor of Divinity at SMU

The Rev. Albert W. McCullin Jr. will be awarded his Bachelor of Divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University on August 23. He has pastored the Carthage Circuit while attending theology school. He is married to Doris Senkel of Cameron and they have son Albert III.

Jack Cammers Return From Japanese Tour

Mr and Mrs Jack Cammer longtime Herald correspondents ended a five week tour of Japan and Hawaii returning to Cameron They visited an air force base near Tokyo with their daughter for about three weeks and spent time in Hawaii before heading home They left Hawaii August 12 after six days and resumed work at their Cameron tailor and cleaning shop on Monday.
