San Gabriel watershed plan touted to slow floodwater

Directors of the San Gabriel River project urge flood control voters in Milam Burnet and Williamson Counties to back a watershed plan that would deploy about 50 small dams to store and gradually release floodwater. If approved two elections would confirm a $10,000 preliminary bond and then $140,000 more for a total project cost of $150,000.

County polio survey seeks rehabilitation needs this month

Milam County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis will conduct a countywide survey this month to identify rehabilitation needs of all post polio patients. County Gilt Show Slated for Cameron August 3

Jaycees Stage Pep Parade Plans for Brenham Beat

Cameron Jaycees begin working stages for the Beat Brenham parade on September 19 and the Brenham train ride September 20. President Don Humble urges nearby colleges and military units to join the downtown parade and plans a pep rally bonfire with Yee High School’s team, cheering section, and band. The Milam County Draft Board met Saturday to review 75 regular and standby reserve files. They added two unnamed men to the reserve list and said recommendations must come through veterans organizations and county officials. College President Seeks Funds for Japanese College Facilities

Logan J. Fox, president of Ibezaki Christian College in Japan, met Cameron Church of Christ to urge a half million dollars for dormitories and facilities. The liberal arts junior college, founded a decade ago, sits 90 miles northeast of Tokyo and aims to become a four-year institution to meet local education demands as Japan’s atomic sector grows. Fox, son of a missionary, plans growth to 5,000 students from 616 and is pursuing advanced degrees between fund drives.

4H Contest Records Due August 31

Maize storage soars in Cameron County as 13 million pounds move

Milam County reports about 13 million pounds of maize purchased or stored with 90 cars of milo lined at Wilson elevator and Milam Grain Co officials noting nine million pounds in since harvest. Moore estimates 60 percent of grain will enter storage with loan price at 1.75 per 100 pounds and average yield near 2 000 pounds per acre. Cotton prospects also steady with ginning totals rising and first bale sold at 625 pounds for 125 dollars.

Three YHS Teachers Hired and Budget Hearing Set

The board unanimously hired three new Yee High School teachers Billy Joe Michalka Monroe Wiederkehr and Monroe Wiederkehr and opened one Engish position. A budget hearing is scheduled for 7 30 pm Tuesday at the superintendent’s office Ben Milam School along with reviews of tax income and district finances.
