The boll worm, also called earworm of corn and tomato fruit worm, is a major pest in Texas cotton. It feeds primarily on squares and young bolls, with moths laying eggs in spring. A single larva can destroy many squares and bolls, affecting multiple crops across regions.
The article explains bollworm generations, with the third generation appearing in August and attacking cotton. It notes overwintering pupae, and recommends winter plowing, early planting of early fruiting varieties, liberal fertilization, and frequent cultivation to hasten maturity. When worms appear, use arsenical dusts with a dedicated spreader, about 6 7 pounds per acre, applied promptly for best results.
