Elleys Greenhouses Exports African Violets from Cameron

The Elleys run Elleys Greenhouses west of Cameron on US 190 SH 36 specializing in African violets and orchids. They ship up to 10,000 plants yearly to Alaska New England Louisiana and many states while gaining wide national notice and hosting visiting groups from Shreveport. Mrs. Elley spoke to Cameron Rotarians and will address a Shreveport violet group.

Blow Out Causes Major Accident on SH-36

A tire blow-out on SH-36 two miles south of Milano injured Mrs. Beverly Richey Stowe and her one year old daughter. Stowe, driving a 1963 Chevrolet, lost control and sideswiped a 1965 Pontiac driven by Emmett Smith of Bryan. Both cars suffered heavy damage. patrolman Milton Wright reported the crash and injuries treated at Richards Clinic in Rockdale.

New Sports Editor Joins Herald Staff

Fritz Pratt a Yoe High junior joins The Herald as sports editor this week. Son of Mr and Mrs Wesley Pratt of Cameron the 16 year old brings writing experience including 1965 district junior ready writing win. He has written short stories for four years and played eighth grade and freshman football B Team basketball and track.

Three Die In Car Train Crash At Gillis Street Cameron

Funeral services were held for Thelma Nadine Baker 31 of Temple Rebecca Lynn Baker 5 and Valarie Conner 8 of Houston who died in a 2 43 p m car train collision at the Gillis Street crossing of the Santa Fe Railroad in Cameron. B. T. Davis the conductor L. M. Garvin the engineer and R. Honeycutt the brakeman were identified. The three victims were killed at the scene or shortly after at St Edward Hospital. Surviving are Tammy Baker 8 and Janice Baird 17 with other relatives listed. Burial was at Oak Hill Cemetery in Cameron. Peace Justice Jess Brock delivered the death certificate findings.

Cameron Teen Center Board Forms for September Opening

An adult advisory group appointed a 7 member student board led by co chairs Mark Meyer and Diana Kurtz to plan a Cameron Teen Center. The center aims to serve about 200 for dances and activities with after school and weekend hours and volunteers to start.

Cameron Scout Named Vice Chief of Tejas OA Lodge

A Cameron Scout, John Posival of Troop 191, was named vice-chief of the Tejas District Lodge Order of Arrow. He joined two other Cameron Scouts at the OA summer convention among six Cameron nominees for OA honors. Rosebud, Rockdale, and Calvert also nominated scouts.

Milam County Declared Area Emergency For Drought Relief

The Farmers Home Administration designated Milam County an emergency area after extended drought. Eligible applicants may obtain 3 percent interest emergency loans to replace livestock, reseed pastures, purchase feed and seed, insecticides, repair equipment and cover essential farm costs. Local farmers should visit the Cameron FHA office for information and applications.

Cameron and Buckholts Announce School Openings and Staffing

Cameron public schools expect 1 650 students with 200 at St Anthony as classes begin September 5. Buckholts starts September 1 with 160 students and full day first day. Ben Milam and O J Thomas feed first graders. registrations set for late August. Staffing gaps include high school commercial teacher and several elementary roles. St Anthony opens September 7 with new classrooms and a half day start. Adult basic education at Buckholts planned for fall with night classes for those with Sth grade or less. Weather notes from Camer show 103 to 59 temperatures

Official readings in Camer over the past week ranged between a sweltering 103 and a cool 59 degrees. Substantial rains continued to avoid the Central Texas area, leaving conditions unsettled.

Nine Rin Tin Tin descendants, eight six week old puppies from a male German Shepherd, flourish at the Joe Gerick home west of Cameron. All eight pups are AKC registered and ready for sale, as Mrs. Gerick notes the challenge of parting with them.

City Council Sets Tuesday Meeting

The Cameron City Council will meet at 5 30 p m Tuesday August 22 at City Hall for a regular business meeting. Repairs on the fire alarm system were made after residents complained the siren sounded too long.

Cameron CISD approves budget and names band hall

Cameron Independent School District gains a 674,096 local budget with 129,381 in federal funds and names the new 50 by 80 foot band hall the J Francis Cox Band Hall. The district expects total 1967 68 funding around 830000 and maintains a 1.50 tax rate. New staff include Lanell Daniel Oscar Wilhite and David Siler. Funding bids and new technology plans for a blackboard by wire system are outlined for Yee and Yoe High Schools.

Milam County reports a new North Milbur wildcat planned at midweek by J M Huber Corp and R F E Smith No 2 W P Hogan in the 173.57 acre David Van Veighton Survey lease. The No 1 Hogan produced 62 bpd from Wilcox at 2695-2707 feet.
