Spired Church of Christ Dismantled in Cameron Landmark

Workmen tore down the old Church of Christ on Third Street Cameron a landmark since 1887 replacing it with a new one story brick building costing 30 000 to be opened this fall The 269-seat sanctuary was once the Presbyterian church built in 1587 and later moved to its present site from the Heffey Stedman property The old structure left a lingering nostalgic air as residents recall its long history and ties to local congregations

Foundations Pouring For Cameron Federal Housing Projects

Work began Tuesday on concrete foundations for Cameron federal housing projects totaling 50 units. Coffield Construction Co. of Rockdale built two developments, a 36 unit white section and a 14 unit non white section on West 12th Street, with brick and stone exteriors and cement block interiors. Narvie Caperton, Cameron Housing Authority chair, said landscaping and services will follow, with Coffield winning the bid at about 455000 dollars.

O G Tumlinson president of the Milam County Farm Bureau says a Texas League proposal to shift farm to market road funds to maintenance could halt new paving. He notes 145.72 miles of Milam rural roads remain unpaved and argues rural roads need adequate funding.

Farmers Begin Milo Crop Amid Mixed Weather in Milam County

Milam County farmers start the milo crop as cloudy spells and intermittent showers delay harvest. County Agent J. D. City Takes Option On 29 Acres For Filtration Plant

Cameron officials discuss a 29 acre site for a filtration plant and seek further estimates on curb and guttering costs for US 77 SH 36. State Highways Dept. offered to add the project to its construction agenda pending city funds, with an estimated local share around 10 000 dollars.

Leland Tindall Rejoins The Herald Production Staff

Leland Tindall, former Cameron resident, returns to The Herald as job printer with his wife Mrs. Tindall and two children moving from Cameron last weekend. He previously worked at Greenville Banner and left The Herald about three and a half years ago. He succeeds Steve Sukup who moved to the Temple Telegram. The family resides at 709 North Milam.

Milam County Officials Release Commodity Schedule

Milam County surplus commodities will be issued from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday in August. Recipients should visit only on days assigned to their routes or communities. Closings occur Fridays. The schedule lists multiple routes and dates including Cameron, Buckholts, Rogers, Ben Arnold, Rosebud, Milano, Gause, Rockdale, San Gabriel, Thorndale, Minerva, Tan glewood, Lexington, and indignant cases with specific case numbers for August 28 and 29.

Cameron lodge of the Knights of Pythias installed its new local officers at 8 p m Monday. Acting District Deputy W H Lucas installed Bassel Wilson as chancellor commander Clarence Allison as vice chancellor. VFW Commander Earns National Citation for Growth

Edward Longhofer, commander of VFW Post 2010 in Cameron, received a national VFW citation for boosting membership by 10 percent over recent months. The award, signed by Cooper T Holt, commander in chief of the National VFW, was sent this week.

Bloodmobile set to collect donations in Cameron

The Red Cross bloodmobile will visit Cameron on Wednesday August 14 to aid the Central Texas Regional Blood Center. From noon to 6 pm the basement of the First Presbyterian Church becomes a donor site with a 70 pint quota. Blood for Milam County is supplied at no cost to patients beyond a nominal hospital charge.

Engineer Says Lagoon System OK For Cameron

The Cameron City Council voted to option land for a lagoon based sewage system and postponed the water plant bid until August. consultant Strachan said the lagoon plan costs about $100 000 less than a trickle system and could serve 16 15 years with 2 2 acres per thousand population. The council heard the land east of the city could be bought for 10 000 or part of a 2 acre tract for 344 85 per acre. A bond issue of 175 000 was approved last year with a 52 931 70 federal grant covering about one third of costs. Work on the intake pump station at Little River and a new finch waterline are under way while Elm Forks Construction Co. starts colfer dam work.

July Fines Total 467 Dollars In Cameron

Maynard Byers, city police chief, reported 467 dollars in July traffic and peace violation fines in Cameron. Speeding led with 10 offenders paying 172.50 dollars. driving without a license accounted for five offenders and 91 dollars. other fines included drunk driving 86 dollars and 86 total, and several smaller penalties. June fines stood at 724.55 dollars with 63 violations, led by speeding at 193.50 dollars from nine violations.
