Gorilla Learns Sign Language to Express With Koko
Koko the gorilla, born July 4, 1971 at the San Francisco Zoo, uses American Sign Language learned under Francine Patterson. She knows about 250 words and can form longer sequences while inventing new terms for objects. The project, supported by the National Geographic Society, aims to study development and social life with hopes of forming a companion and possibly a colony. Patterson notes Koko’s IQ near 80 to 85, placing her in the low normal human range and emphasizes ongoing lifetime study and the dream of a language‑passing gorilla colony.
