Cameron will have a new fire station, a fire truck, and other facilities after bonds totaling 55 000 dollars were approved by voters 394 to 236. The margin guarantees city needs spanning decades, despite opposition to building on the current fire station site.
A Bronze Star was awarded to Texan Elbert Isaacs a Master Sergeant in the First Armored Division for meritorious service in Korea. Major General Bruce C Clarke presented the decoration as part of a Division Artillery review. Captain Joseph C Kiefe Jr. also received recognition. Isaacs earned the award during US Army service in late 1949.
The Austin SSA office will send a representative to Cameron on Tuesday August 14 at 1:00 PM at the Department of Public Welfare to explain benefits under the liberalized Social Security Law and help local residents file claims. The visit follows weekly tours to Centex towns and aided 66 claims in seven days across eight towns.
Virginia Brown daughter of Mr and Mrs Henry Brown had a tonsillectomy at St Edward Hospital and is expected to resume duties with the Metal Goods Corporation in Houston soon.
Mary E Fuller 86 of Cameron died Monday at St Edward Hospital after a Sunday stroke. A Crockett native, she had lived in Milam County most of her life and left four daughters and a son. Funeral at Full Gospel Tabernacle Tuesday 2 30 p m with Green Funeral Home handling arrangements. Interment Walkers Creek Cemetery.
The Texas Local Board No 92 on N Central Street Cameron changes office hours from 8 AM to 3 PM on weekdays to 8 PM to 5 PM effective Monday August 13 announced by Chairman August G Kunz. The board is closed Saturdays but registrants and advisors remain available countywide with listed contacts for assistance.
Joint funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. James Elrod were held at Marek Burns Chapel with Rev. Harrison McLerran officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. The Elrods, locals of Cameron, were killed when their car was struck by the Santa Fe Chief seven miles south of Cameron. Mrs. Elrod, born May 4 1899 in Cameron, was active in Farm Bureau and civic life. she left surviving father W D Faver, brother T J Faver, and sister Mrs Mildred Coston. Mr. Elrod, born 1888 in Missouri, had lived in Milam County 20 years. he had no survivors listed. Pallbearers named.
Billy Mollett, 20, a Colored man, drowned Sunday around noon in the Little River near Maysfield. He stepped into an eight foot hole while swimming back after crossing the river. Sheriff Carl C. Black said he could not swim. brothers and a companion failed to pull him out. Body recovered at 3 PM by Sheriff Black and Mollett’s father Calvin Mollett. Employed on L. C. Boyd farm. Body sent to Phillips Luckey Funeral Home, Rockdale.
Early Sunday services from 7 to 7 30 at the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church are broadcast on Radio Station KTAE Taylor. Rev. H M Bowley pastor in charge invites radio listeners to tune to 1260 for the messages.
Mrs. Charlie Gelner 71 died in a Pasadena hospital August 6 1951 while visiting her daughter Mrs Charles Simecek She was born in 1880 in Czechoslovakia and lived in Milam County most of her life Funeral services were to be held August 8 at SS Cyril and Methodus Ma rak with Rev Ben Holub and burial in Marak Cemetery Green's Funeral Home in charge Surviving are son Johnny Gelner Cameron three daughters Cameron and Pasadena and one brother Frank Pavelka Casper Wyoming
Cameron Volunteer Fire Department and Rosebud crew battled a blaze at St. Michael’s Parish garage and workshop in Burlington. A house owned by Bart Cahill burned, furniture saved, and Walter Marek’s home narrowly escaped damage. Estimated $15,000 loss. water shortages hindered efforts. Fire crews praised for protecting surrounding communities.
Four Lackland Air Force Base soldiers from the 35th and 37th Training Squadron were injured in a Monday morning crash near the Milam Burleson County line. Driver Sgt Sam King reported one occupant fell on his arm causing the collision. All four were hospitalized at Newton Memorial Hospital with non life threatening injuries: Duncan broke left elbow Crist broke collar bone King broke ankle Mowry broke toe.
Sam Hood Smith is visiting relatives in Cameron this week, with travel noted as a brief family visit.
Petitioners petition Judge Dan Tyson to order a September 1 election on consolidating Curry Common School District with Cameron Independent School District for school purposes only. The Belmena Vogelsang and Walkers Creek districts already merged into Curry. Cameron and Curry voters submitted petitions with 56 and over 20 required signatures, while Cameron board president Dr. Clifford Swift says no interference with Curry operations this year.
Mr and Mrs Lester Glass returned from a 20 day tour of western states and Canada. They visited Yellowstone National Park and Canadian summer resorts. In Denver and California they met wholesale flower dealers. The trip included Washington Oregon Idaho and visits in California.
S-Sgt Donald F. Brewer of 36 E Greenwood Avenue Oaklyn New Jersey is at the Air University's School of Aviation Medicine on Maxwell Field Alabama attending Medical Service Supervisor Courses. Col Leslie G Mulzer Maxwell commander announced. Brewer entered the Air Force in 1946 and is married to Fae D Whitley of Cameron Texas.
Mr and Mrs S W McClaren and their son Rex spent the weekend visiting relatives in Waco.
Mrs Louella Hobson Shafer 92 native of Milam County died in Amarillo Tuesday August 7 after long illness. She was born October 16 1858 and lived in Milam for decades. Survived by two sons Howard and Horace Shafer and many grandchildren. Funeral August 9 in Memphis with interment in Memphis Cemetery. Funeral details by Austin Funeral Home.
Mrs. E L Rutherford had an operation at Providence Hospital in Waco early Monday and is reported doing nicely. Her friends hope she will be able to return home soon. Mr and Mrs Rutherford are managers of Pearson and Sons Furniture Store here.
Cameron welcomes the New Longmire Grocery Market at 804 North Washington as owners Mr and Mrs Arthur Longmire host an open house from 8 30 a m to 12 noon Thursday Refreshments will be served and shoppers are invited to visit the new store which features quality staple merchandise fresh vegetables and an up to date meat department.
