Needed Facilities Assured City Firemen

Cameron will have a new fire station, a fire truck, and other facilities after bonds totaling 55 000 dollars were approved by voters 394 to 236. The margin guarantees city needs spanning decades, despite opposition to building on the current fire station site.

Bronze Star Awarded To Texan At Fort Hood

A Bronze Star was awarded to Texan Elbert Isaacs a Master Sergeant in the First Armored Division for meritorious service in Korea. Major General Bruce C Clarke presented the decoration as part of a Division Artillery review. Captain Joseph C Kiefe Jr. also received recognition. Isaacs earned the award during US Army service in late 1949.

Social Security Rep Schedules Evening Visit to Cameron

The Austin SSA office will send a representative to Cameron on Tuesday August 14 at 1:00 PM at the Department of Public Welfare to explain benefits under the liberalized Social Security Law and help local residents file claims. The visit follows weekly tours to Centex towns and aided 66 claims in seven days across eight towns.

Mary E Fuller 86 Dies After Stroke in Cameron

Mary E Fuller 86 of Cameron died Monday at St Edward Hospital after a Sunday stroke. A Crockett native, she had lived in Milam County most of her life and left four daughters and a son. Joint Funeral Service For Mr and Mrs Elrod Held Here

Joint funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. James Elrod were held at Marek Burns Chapel with Rev. Harrison McLerran officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. The Elrods, locals of Cameron, were killed when their car was struck by the Santa Fe Chief seven miles south of Cameron. Mrs. Elrod, born May 4 1899 in Cameron, was active in Farm Bureau and civic life. she left surviving father W D Faver, brother T J Faver, and sister Mrs Mildred Coston. Mr. Elrod, born 1888 in Missouri, had lived in Milam County 20 years. he had no survivors listed. Pallbearers named.

Billy Mollett Drowns In Little River Near Maysfield

Billy Mollett, 20, a Colored man, drowned Sunday around noon in the Little River near Maysfield. He stepped into an eight foot hole while swimming back after crossing the river. Sheriff Carl C. Black said he could not swim. brothers and a companion failed to pull him out. Body recovered at 3 PM by Sheriff Black and Mollett’s father Calvin Mollett. Employed on L. C. Boyd farm. Body sent to Phillips Luckey Funeral Home, Rockdale.

Fire destroys St. Michael’s Parish garage in Cameron

Cameron Volunteer Fire Department and Rosebud crew battled a blaze at St. Michael’s Parish garage and workshop in Burlington. A house owned by Bart Cahill burned, furniture saved, and Walter Marek’s home narrowly escaped damage. Estimated $15,000 loss. water shortages hindered efforts. Fire crews praised for protecting surrounding communities.

Four Lackland Soldiers Injured In Morning Crash

Four Lackland Air Force Base soldiers from the 35th and 37th Training Squadron were injured in a Monday morning crash near the Milam Burleson County line. Driver Sgt Sam King reported one occupant fell on his arm causing the collision. Voters Decide Consolidation Of Cameron Curry School Districts

Petitioners petition Judge Dan Tyson to order a September 1 election on consolidating Curry Common School District with Cameron Independent School District for school purposes only. The Belmena Vogelsang and Walkers Creek districts already merged into Curry. Cameron and Curry voters submitted petitions with 56 and over 20 required signatures, while Cameron board president Dr. Clifford Swift says no interference with Curry operations this year.

Mrs Louella Hobson Shafer 92 native of Milam County died in Amarillo Tuesday August 7 after long illness. She was born October 16 1858 and lived in Milam for decades.
