Old Landmark Goes Construction Starts On Church Of Christ

Workmen began dismantling the 70 plus year old Church of Christ at 100 E Third St to build a new 4160 square foot brick sanctuary costing 30000. Graham Construction Co Cameron won the bid for the project with Bush Construction Co Cameron handling the air conditioning. The church will seat about 260 with Bible school space for 250 while about 100 members meet in the Cameron Livestock Auction arena during construction.

Jaycees Plan Bonfire Rally for Brenham Cub Game

Cameron Jaycees report progress on a bonfire rally and parade to boost Yee High School grid hopes for the Brenham game. They aim to involve a military band contact, city and National Guard participation, and a Yeomen boosters band with tickets set at 1.75 dollars. Site for the rally is not yet chosen.

Lincoln area recreation name honors fallen flier Captain Bowling

Lincoln area recreation site at Lincoln Air Force Base renamed for Air Force Captain Russell R. Bowling who died in an England TDY accident. Bowling, a 471st Bomber Squadron pilot, flew 46 World War II missions and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, and the Purple Heart. Col. Perry M. Horsington notes the dedication reflects love of outdoors and natural resources.

Officials Urge Poison Check In City Streets

City officials urge businesses to stop placing poison along window edges and sidewalks as reduced water pressure prevents washing away dead crickets in gutters. They say crickets swept into gutters pile up until pressure returns, with summer watering blamed for low pressure. Mayor Weems notes poison should be used only at entranceways while the twice weekly schedule continues.

San Gabriel Meet Sets Flood Plan Amid Watershed Election

A San Gabriel River watershed meeting is planned for August 12 at the San Gabriel school to discuss flood prevention and the August 24 watershed election. Milam County citizens are invited as directors explain the program and H B Fox speaks. The August 24 vote covers district approval and $10 000 in preliminary bonds, with candidates including Jim Stewart and five others. If approved a second election would decide about $140 000 in bonds.

San Gabriel girl crowned Milam County Farm Bureau queen

Miss Mary Smith, a 1957 Thorndale High School graduate from San Gabriel, won the Milam County Farm Bureau queen title before about 500 attendees at Simon-George Hall. Runner up was Nelda Zoe Charles, age 17, of Rockdale.

Milam County Criticizes Cameron City Over Road Widening

Milam County Commissioners Court passed a resolution condemning what it calls a lack of action by Cameron City Council on the US 77 SH 36 widening project. Mayor Weems and Councilmen Moseley Brady say state funds were pledged in a May letter for curb and gutter in the 1957 54 budget as the new fiscal year starts October 1. Brady notes missing road line specifications hinder obstruction clearance and right of way costs have depleted funds for curb gutter sidewalks and storm sewers. The resolution urges immediate action to reschedule the project and offers the commission's assistance.

Joint 4 H Camp Set For August 8

The joint 4H Girls and Boys county camp will be in Ledbett ed Park in Cameron on Thursday, August 8. Registration runs from 9:00 to 9:90. Milam County home demonstration agent and assistant county agent offer information. Swimming and games are planned for the family. Barbecue will be served for the evening meal.

Buckholts Troop Wins Campcraft At Camporee

Buckholts Boy Scout Troop 190 won the camp craft events at the Tejas District Camporee held at Wilson Ledbetter Park over the weekend. Milam County troops competed with Cameron Troop 83 taking second, Rockdale Troop 50 and Cameron Troop 52 tied for third. Rockdale also won the swim meet and will enter the council swimming event on August 6 in Waco. Kennedy announced a Roundtable at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church and said program material for the next year would be distributed then.

Three Way Race Looms For 9AAA Grid Crown

University High Stephenville and Cameron vie for the 9AAA conference title as YHS coach Leo Jackson predicts a strong Cameron squad with 17 returning lettermen and a stiff U High lineup led by Carl Gatlin and Arthur Fuentes. Crop Report Signals Limited Maize Harvest Start

Rain last week boosted crops in the northern county with showers up to two inches benefiting late corn maize garia cotton and hay meadows. Maize harvest began on a limited scale as early maize rotted and dry hot weather presses yields.
