Jean Larson Named President of Pilot International at 56th Convention

Jean Larson, Milwaukee co usin and executive vice president of a Milwaukee Journal film subsidiary, becomes Pilot International president elect amid 2000 delegates from 570 clubs at the New Orleans Fairmont Hotel. The organization funds scholarships, aids the handicapped and aged, and affiliates with CARE and Project HOPE. The convention ends July 21. Myles Glenn, Kalamazoo biochemist tied to Upjohn, recovers from a second round of heart attacks. FML cites two reasons it runs.

Milam Areans Construction Advances at Alcoa Rockdale Works

Milam Areans Construction continues on schedule at the Rockdale site where a new 5.5 megawatt power unit rises beside the 3 unit 325 megawatt plant. Six contractors employ about 140 workers with Brown & Root as general contractor for the new power plant and Texas Power & Light Co. as partner. Butler Construction Co. builds a new lignite hopper.

County Judge Criticizes Low Turnout At Public Hearing

Robertson County Judge Wesley Peyton voiced disappointment over the revenue sharing hearing with no citizen attendance despite repeated calls for input. He lamented apathy and noted the public’s opposition to engagement, saying people are not interested and only wish to raise objections.

Thorndale Puts Forth $8,400 More School Funds

Ambulance Volunteers Back Up On Call in Cameron

Cameron Volunteer Ambulance Service marks eleven months of operation with 37 active volunteers who handle 12 hour shifts, many trained as ECAs or EMTs. In ten months they logged 375 calls including 122 emergencies and 174 home-to-hospital runs, aided by police and fire partners, and credit local funerals for ambulance funding.

Buckholts Begins Sewer System Construction

Buckholts starts last week on a new sewer system replacing septic tanks for 161 homes and 15 businesses. The project includes 24,000 feet of eight inch pipe, a north Buckholts plant, crossing Highway 36 and the Santa Fe Railroad, with lines to the south. Two six man crews will work ten hour days, weather permitting, funded by a 351000 loan and a 99000 grant from Farmers Home Administration.

Zeigler Named District 17 Engineer for Texas Highways

Zeigler is appointed District Engineer for District 17 succeeding retiree Joe G. Hanover. He oversees construction and maintenance across ten counties and 2840 miles of federal and state highways in the Bryan District, after a long tenure starting in Hearne and Bryan since 1953. Zeigler, a Gatesville native, has held senior posts and is a Texas Society of Professional Engineers director.

Fire destroys pickup at Paul Nabours place

Volunteer firemen were called out at 5 45 p m Wednesday to the Paul Nabours place on Salem Road where a pickup was destroyed by fire. Cause of the fire was unknown.
