Air Cadet Ralph Gunnels Killed in Plane Crash

Aviation Cadet Ralph E. Gunnels, 25, of Milam County, died in a plane crash near Ardmore Oklahoma on a routine mission from Perrin Field Sherman. Funeral services were held in San Angelo with military honors as planes from Goodfellow Field paid tribute.

Milam county leads Central Texas in War Bond buys with a total of 1,717,243.97 by noon Thursday. Cameron city purchases reach 131,373.97 by the same hour. Countywide 2nd War Loan totals exceed two million dollars with Milam aiming for 1,744,723.97 in bonds.

Ralph Greer Vaughan a Seabee carpenter’s mate first class from Milam county, is stationed in the South Pacific after training in Norfolk Gulfport Oxnard and is writing home to Cameron. His son Lt Roy L Vaughan, a Cook and Messenger turned pilot, serves in the Army Air Corps transport service after training at Sequoia Field and Stockton California.

The Herald report by Emory B. Camp shows Cameron war bond total at 1 117 611 with 24 125 bought over Friday and Saturday. Milam County at noon Saturday reached 1 706 000 as Thorndale planned last minute canvassing to exceed the county quota.

City Marshal Warns Dog Owners to Vaccinate Now

City Marshal Dan Lunsford issues a second warning on rabies in Cameron. He vows drastic action and says any unvaccinated dog caught on streets within hours will be shot, following a prior notice and reports that about 75 dogs have already been killed.

War Bonds credited to Milam purchases

War Bonds totaling $10,000 were credited to Milam County due to Slavonic Benevolent Order members residing there. Emory B. Camp reports a 250,000 bond purchase by the S P J S T Supreme Lodge. Buckholts hosts one of the largest lodges with a modern hall and building.

Rabid Dog Killed Here Sunday Warns of Rabies Risk

City police officer Jim McGoldrick issued a 4 p m warning after a mad dog attacked several dogs Sunday before being killed. A Pasteur Institute report from Dr S W Hohis confirmed rabies and a telegram was sent to a man in Waco who may require treatment. Dog owners were urged to isolate their pets for the required period.

Sweet potato crop prices set under Food for Freedom program

Texas USDA War Board announced support prices for sweet potatoes under the Food for Freedom plan. Prices range from 1.15 per bushel Aug–Nov to 1.586 per bushel Dec–Jan, with 1.10 in Feb–Apr 1944, for U.S. No. 1 potatoes packed in crates. U.S. No. 2 quality receives 15 cents below No. 1. Conley Family Fund donations noted from local residents

Furman Shuffield gave 5.09, L. A. Swanzy contributed, and Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Horton gave 2.50 to the Conley family fund. The Hortons, who were in Cameron, left a contribution. Their son Demp Horton was killed at Pearl Harbor aboard the West Virginia. L. Horton Jr. and Gordon Horton have served in the navy for years.
