Funeral services for Jones Wofford war veteran who died in the Veterans Hospital in Waco were held at 4 p m Monday at Green Funeral Home Cameron with Rev Bob Pool officiating. Interment in Oak Hill Cemetery. Survived by mother Mrs Hallie Wofford Cameron father Bob Wofford Waco brother Nat B Wofford Port Arthur.
Technician James D. Leath, who joined the army December 1 1941, trained in California, then sent overseas. In recent months he has seen actual combat, earned a promotion to Sergeant Technician, and rests in Australia. He is 23, from Cameron Milam County, a Yee High School graduate, currently in quarantine and treating malaria.
Sergeant Rudolph Balusek, inducted February 7, 1942, served at Fort Bliss and Fort Knox before training and maneuvers in several states. He fought with the Tank Destroyer Division and was seriously wounded in Northwest Africa on November 28, 1942, with word of his condition arriving January 7, 1943. He is recovering in an English hospital and is one of five Balusek brothers from Marak who farm nearby.
A stark editorial urges swift punishment for John L Lewis and striking miners. It argues confrontations harm national effort, condemns unions as un American and deserters who must be held to law and order. An old Bailey quote about removing rats from a house is cited to justify harsh action.
Paul Patton formerly of Lott was killed in an Alabama arsenal Friday. He served with the Provost Marshal's Depart ment as a Military Policeman. Funeral services planned for Monday at Sen Arnold. Patton, cousin to Nolan and Neal Dodson of Cameron, leaves a family in Lott. Neal Dodson serves in California.
Reverend Ira F. Key former Cameron First Methodist pastor died Tuesday in Marlin Hospital. He led Cameron church during its construction and later served as a Presiding Elder in East Texas. His son Capt Eugene Key died on Guadalcanal. the family established SMU journalism fellowship in his honor. Funeral services planned locally.
Texas legislator A N Green returns home from Austin for the weekend. He authored a law allowing the last pension check mailed to a deceased aged person to be cashed. He also secured a filing date change for state office candidates to the third Monday in May.
D. M. Carter of Taylor was among the out of town visitors in Cameron on Thursday.
W F Taylor will hold a poultry disease meeting in the Vocational Agriculture room at Yee High School at 8 30 p m Wednesday May 12. The event invites everyone interested in poultry to attend and Fuchs Bros Hatchery urges city poultry raisers under the Food for Freedom program to join.
In Australia for some time is Sgt Edward J Slovak United States Army Air Corps. He enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor and wore the uniform from December 8 1941. Trained at Sheppard Field Texas and Wichita Falls prior to joining American expeditionary forces.
Fear rises in Italy as Mussolini makes a direct appeal while Axis leaders fear early invasion. Possible targets include Sicily and Sardinia. Churchill warns of a strike through Italy, aiming at the axis' soft underbelly. Allies report breakthroughs near Tunis and continuing German resistance in the Caucasus and Russia air combats.
Radishes from Joe Kuhn’s garden attract much attention at the Herald display. One root resembles a nude human figure and the others are hard to describe. A radish pulled Sunday measured about 18 inches.
Coal miners resume work Monday under a 15 day halt negotiated by Harold Ickes with John L. Lewis as President Roosevelt appeals for return to work. Workers return to old contract terms with possible future adjustments to the Labor Board. It is expected miners may gain a $2 per day increase and other benefits as negotiations proceed.
LELAND GREEN urges Cameron residents to place scrap metal including old wire pipes and buckets at curbs for Army trucks to collect. About 80 soldiers will oversee the curbside collection and assist those unable to help, inviting strong community support for the war effort.
Marty Maxine Akers of Cameron among 260 Baylor students set to receive degrees at Sunday commencement. To accommodate 400 army trainees starting May 10, spring term is accelerated with graduation moved to May 9 and Col. Julien C. Hyer of Dallas to deliver the address. Akers will take a chemistry BA after Cameron High School and UT attendance.
Miss Leona and Nadine Dodd, workers at the Fort Worth consolidated aircraft factory, spent the weekend visiting relatives and friends in Rosebua and Cameron.
