Sixteen year old Sandra Haynie led a record nine woman field at Cameron Country Club to win the Cameron Women’s Golf Association tournament with a two over par 72 and also captured the driving contest. Local and Cen-Tex players from Austin Waco Hearne Temple Cameron Rockdale Bryan and Garland competed across flights with Kim Alexander and Kitty McKenzie also posting low scores.

Officials Urge $50,000 Goal for Newton Memorial Hospital

Newton Memorial Hospital officials press a minimum $50,000 target for the proposed new facility. They cite a total value exceeding $600,000 for the building, grounds, and existing structure and land, with $90,000 needed but $50,000 or 8 percent of the $600,000 total required to proceed. They note $60,000 in outside contributions are promised if the local drive succeeds, contingent on local fundraising.

St Monica’s Plans 20000 Addition For Church Rectory

St Monica's Catholic Church members approved a 20000 addition to the rectory. Anderie Lumber Co Cameron was awarded the contract to add rooms to the rectory. Construction will begin soon. A church picnic is set for June 19 at Simon George Hall, the first in years. A large crowd attended the parish meeting.

Cameronite Recovers From Wreck Injuries

Mrs. Joe Matula of Cameron is convalescing after suffering three broken ribs and a scalp laceration in a two car crash at the Old Temple Highway and SH 36 intersection around 2 50 p m Sunday. Her husband Joe Matula was later released from Newton Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The Matula car a 1955 Dodge collided with a 1958 Ford driven by Mr Perry of Alvin. Rid ing with Perry were his wife and four children all of whom escaped injury.

Radio alert helps police trap two filling station burglars

Jimmy Hancock age 20 and Billie Hurst age 19 of Waco were jailed in Milam County on burglary charges. A Cameron break in triggered a city dispatcher alert and State Trooper Jack Straley intercepted the suspects near the US 77 SH 36 junction, leading to their capture. They face charges for three stations Gus Plentl Mobil Service Dero Jenkins Texaco and Alton Logan Oil Co with losses totaling around 4, 0, and 90 dollars plus personal items missing.

Absentee Balloting Underway In Milam County

Absentee balloting in Milam County Democratic primary has netted 32 ballots counted so far. Balloting opened April 17 and will end officially May 3. Fifteen voters cast in person and 17 ballots were mailed to absentees, with not all returned. Officials note ballots must be mailed by May 3 or received in person by then.

Highway contract awarded for Milam County project

A Bryan firm won a 1.2 mile construction contract on F M 487 in Milam County with the low bid of 51833 dollars. San Gabriel River bottom work 4.4 miles west of U S 77 north of Rockdale will take about 60 working days with C B Thames Bryan district highway engineer in charge and Carol D Zeigler Hearne resident engineer overseeing construction.

School Registration Set For May 10 11

Registration for all children entering first grade in September 1960 will be held in the Ben Milam Cafetorium on May 10 and 11 at 2 45 and 3 45 p m, according to Leon L Brady principal of elementary schools. If a birth certificate and immunization records for smallpox and diphtheria are present, the child will be ready for school and need not report again until September. After registration parents and children are invited to visit the first grade rooms.
