Western Week plans outlined for Cameron show

The Cameron Chamber meeting outlines plans for Western Week and the July 15 16 Cameron Saddle Club horse show. DuBois says the event, co sponsored by the Chamber Jaycees and Saddle Club, aims to top last year with parades stunts and events drawing Texas crowds.

He says only fully addressed items reach carriers, with most mail returned as Insufficient Address unless recipient is widely known. Weather notes show rain sought today as a second week of dry weather passes. Temperatures ranged from 45 to 89 during a mild seven day period of wet and dry conditions.

Cameron School Board elects officers and preserves retirement policy

The Cameron School Board elected Max Howard as president, Dr. Gus Evans Jr. as vice president, and Dr. David Shapiro as secretary. The board upheld a 65 retirement age policy for teachers, re hired most staff, and announced new appointments including Milton J Schiller and F W Vogelsang as trustees. Four teachers are affected by the retirement rule and other personnel changes were approved.

Milam County Junior Broiler Show Set for April 30

The Milam County Junior Broiler Show begins at 6:30 a.m. Saturday April 30 at the Main Street and Travis venue. Contestants from across Milam County compete for trophies ribbons and cash prizes in the annual Chamber of Commerce event with Cameron merchants offering specials on April 29 and 30.

City Groups Schedule Safe-Driving Clinic and Poultry Show

Cameron hosts a Tuesday night safe driving clinic at the First Methodist Fellowship Hall with speeches by Brad H. Smith and Joe Perry and a Q A session on trash regulations. The same event is run by the Cameron Chamber of Commerce Milam County Farm Bureau and County Home Demonstration Council with coffee and doughnuts served. A poultry show and amateur judging contest run April 30 at First Methodist Fellowship Hall features five broilers and two divisions cockrels and pullets with prizes and grand champions. Banquet tickets cost $1 and must be bought by April 29 at the Cameron Chamber office.

Mayor and Council Take Oaths Milam Grand Jury Indicts Four Men

The Milam District Grand Jury, in its March term, returned four indictments after five days of hearings. Indictments include burglary of a car belonging to Robert Titsworth dated around December 4, 1959. burglary of a Williams home. fraudulent disposition of mortgaged property tied to a tandem trailer from Redenbeck Auto Supply. and burglary charges against Charlie Lee Brown dated about August 10, 1959.

Council defers Lone Star Gas rate increase request

Lone Star Gas Co seeks a 54 cent municipal rate rise with a 5.4 cent increase for residential and commercial customers. Mayor Duncum urges further discussion and the council tables the item. Burke notes the average monthly bill would rise about 35 cents, saying costs at the city gate have increased amid pipeline competition.

New Record Set At 18 AA Track Meet

Richard Inman and Belton relay squads led eight records shattered at the District 1BAA Track Meet held last Thursday in Cameron. Inman topped last year in shot put and discus while Malone clocked 21.1 in the low hurdles. Belton’s 449 Yard Relay ran 45.7, Jolton’s squad featured six members including Whithire and Clark, and the mile relay posted 3.89.8 with Moy and Inman among others.

Guardsmen to Hold Marksmanship Tests at North Ft Hood

Guardsmen of Company C 5th Medium Tank Battalion plan two days of small arms practice and qualification at North Fort Hood this weekend. The unit will depart Cameron early Saturday in their own vehicles, stage overnight near the rifle range, and return late Sunday. Five members reenlisted for three more years: Platoon Sergeant William K Leonard Specialist 4 Howard S Drummond Private First Class Leon R Terry Fabian J Klecka Jr and Johnny A Klecka all in Company C except Fabian Klecka in the Mess section.

Reichert Earns Phi Beta Kappa At Texas

John D. Reichert 21 son of Mr and Mrs Ben Reichert formerly of Cameron gained membership in Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Texas and received PBK's $59 award for outstanding scholastic achievement. Honors Day presented the honor after reevaluation following a missed Spring list.

Griffith Named Mayor Pro Tem In Cameron City Council

Four new city council members and a new mayor were sworn in at Cameron City Hall, with Coleman Duncum taking office as mayor. John A. Smith EL Wied Roy Griffith and Sam Houston sworn in. Griffith named mayor pro tem. Council also named Earle Moseley Electric as light replacement contractor and reappointed Narvie Caperton Earl Curtis August Kunz to the Cameron Housing Authority board. The council approved a swimming pool lease to Makie McDermott Jr. and Ray Green for the summer and paid Texas Concrete Co. for pipe work in East Cameron. Council tabled Lone Star Gas rate raise request pending further review.
