Board Offers Public Hospital to City and County

Newton Memorial Hospital board proposes transferring the entire physical plant to Cameron and Milam County while pledging continued support for a building program. City Council weighs Lone Star Gas rate increase

Councilmen Tuesday reviewed a 5.4 cent per MCF request from Lone Star Gas Co. for residential and commercial rates, with district manager Charlie Burke noting the rise covers increased wellhead costs and would add about one cent daily for the average home. Houston Firm Seeks 80 Barrel Per Day Oil Permit

General Crude Oil Company of Houston seeks authorization for an 80 barrel a day output from its No 2 Perry deep wildcat in Milam County. The well drilled to 8621 feet showed minor oil gas in Edwards and Navarro, but produced on swabbing at 3475 to 3506 feet after being completed in Navarre. Nearby activity includes four shallow wells under way or completed by local operators with mixed results.

Lions Club Plans Annual Broom Sale

The Cameron Lions Club starts an annual broom sale at 1 p.m. next Tuesday to fund the Lions Crippled Children's Camp and other projects. Two Boys Drown In Cameron Tank

James White 9 and Charles White 12 drowned in a Cameron water tank while swimming with children in the colored park. Officials ruled accidental drowning after about an hour of rescue attempts as volunteers and law enforcement responded. Funeral services set for Sunday at Phillip and Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Funeral services were held Tuesday for Mrs. John Newman 87 who died Sunday at St Edwards Hospital. Born June 24 1873 in Czechoslovakia she is survived by five sons Frank Newman Joe Newman Carl Newman Will Newman and Alfred Newman two daughters Mrs Mary Schiller and Mrs Matilda Zalesky 26 grandchildren 37 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. About 400 members of the Central Texas Volunteer Firemen Association gathered in Cameron for their 47th semi annual convention. It was the largest turnout in recent years with awards, poster selections, and a delegate chosen for the State Firemen’s Convention. Brenham, Seguin, and Rosebud won pumper races while Killeen, Round Rock, and Thorndale took the ladies race prizes.

About 6 000 voters may participate in the first spring Democratic primary in history set for Saturday. 33 offices and 50 candidates appear on the ballot with absentee voting noted at the county clerk’s office. precinct managers are urged to report results by 24 hours after polls close.

McClaren outlined polling hours 8 p m to 7 p m across the county and a runoff primary set for June 4 if no candidate wins a majority. Results will be tallied at the Milam County Courthouse with announcements starting at 7 p m. Precinct conventions occur Saturday with Cameron and Rockdale at 7 30 p m and 2 30 p m in the other 34 precincts.

Law Requires Democrats Only In May Primary

Milam County Democratic Executive Committee announces voters must bring poll tax receipts to the May 7 Democratic primary. Receipts must be stamped Democrat and nonreceipt leads to an affidavit of lost receipt. Republicans are not permitted to vote in the Democratic primary under 1959 Texas law.
