County Agents Notes New Program to Cut Feed Costs
Milam County Agent J. D. Moore reports on the 1961 Feed Grain Program signed March 22, 1961 aimed at reducing feed grain surplus and program costs. The note traces changes in acreage and production of sorghum and other grains since the 1950s, the impact of WW II and Korean War shifts, and the move away from acreage controls creating a larger overall production.

Coastal Bermuda Suggested For Conservation Use
College Station farmers in the feed grain program can profit by establishing Coastal Bermuda for conservation. Extension specialist George McBee notes the hybrid grass is adaptable and high yielding, with spring planting best in Texas. He advises use of fresh sprigs, a clean moist seedbed, and 36 to 42 inch rows with 36 inch spacing, about 9 bushels per acre. Fertilizer should follow soil tests and be banded beside the sprigs, not broadcast, and may be delayed until Coastal grows to reduce weed competition.
