Teacher Wins Scholarship For Six-Week Summer Study

Mrs. Virginia Schuhsler, Cameron’s Yee High graduate and Ben Milam third grade teacher, won an American Studies Scholarship from Abilene Christian College. She will attend the two six week sessions beginning June 6, joining 99 other teachers and students, with full room board tuition and fees paid.

Merchants Approve Cameron Promotion Plan

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce trade and development committee voted to start a weekly promotion about June 1. About 15 Cameron merchants discussed a city wide program with a Saturday drawing and a 25 merchant minimum participation. Milam County Civil Defense Classes Reach Thirteen

James Luckey reports 13 Civil Defense classes completed in eight months in Milam County. Eight communities held sessions with 258 graduates and peak attendance 434. Classes occurred in Cameron, Thorndale, Rockdale, Sharp, Milano, Tracy Marak, and San Gabriel. Further classes planned in Cameron and Rockdale. statewide totals show 25,000 graduates since June 1959.

Bids Set for Nine Mile US 77 South French Road Extension

Bids will be opened May 20 for the nine mile US 77 segment from Rockdale to the Lee County line. Condemnation settlements totaling 34 806.40 were approved in Milam County for right of way. The project, part of the US 77 program from Minerva to Rockdale, will be bid by the Texas Highway Department in Austin.

Royce Glaser and Dennis Jis tel of Cameron rout earn grand champion and reserve honors at the Milam Junior Broiler Show held in Cameron. Bill Burns presided at the awards banquet with Johnnie Watkins urging higher Milam farm production and Ed Parnell judging the eighth annual event drawing about 220 attendees.

Council Approves Fire Truck Plan in Cameron

The Cameron City Council voted to draft specifications for bid ders on a new fire truck and to install light poles at Negro Park. A nine thousand dollar truck fund plus three thousand from the budget cover costs. Six 55 foot poles will be erected for lighting at the park. The council also approved paving assessments on Elith Street and noted the Northwest Cameron sewer extension near completion with eight to twelve households already under contract. Intersections on US 77 and Fourth Street remain under State Highway Department maintenance with plans for concrete aprons when feasible. The council unanimously approved a resolution praising Richard Moseley for re election and upcoming move to Lubbock where he will join the Chamber of Commerce.

15 Year Revolution Drug Progress Cited by Lederle Rep

John Anderson of Lederle Laboratories spoke to Cameron Rotarians on drugs progress over 15 years from penicillin to oreomycin. He noted reduced mental illness and orphan numbers, lower pneumonia deaths, and rising drug costs versus living costs, with 85 percent of current drugs unseen 15 years ago and 75 percent from abroad. He described Lederle's $6 million cancer research and cautioned about sulfa drugs erasing prior investments.

Boy 7 Struck by Pickup, Injured Crossing Street

Paul Gay, seven, son of Mr and Mrs John Gay of 304 East 12th Street, was hit by a westbound pickup driven by Bob Bailey of Cameron while crossing near his home. He was rushed to St Edward's Hospital after the 12 40 p m Thursday accident.

Houston Man Faces Five Years In Burglary Case

James Richard Clements, 66, of Houston, pleaded guilty in Milam District Court to burglary of Cameron Machine Shop. He received a five year penitentiary sentence. He was arrested in Houston after the shop was burglarized of about 500 dollars in tools.
