Ben Hardie Bailey United States Navy Fireman First Class is home on leave with his parents Mr and Mrs J Robert Bailey from Gulfport Mississippi where he attends the basic engineering school. He enlisted October 23 1944 at 17 and was born August 28 1927. He trained at San Diego and has gained 22 pounds since enlistment. He hopes for sea duty and will soon return to Gulfport after a short leave. He is grandson of Constable B F Bailey of Cameron and attended Cameron schools and A and M summer school.

River flood cuts traffic on Highway 36 East

Back From Europe PFC Frank Kopriva Jr Arrives in Temple
PFC Frank Kopriva Jr. of the Second Division has arrived at McCloskey Hospital in Temple from a base hospital in North Carolina after losing a leg in December 1944. He previously spent time in an English hospital and served in Europe. His brother Anton Kopriva is fighting in Germany. While stationed in San Antonio he drove the car in which President Roosevelt toured the army center.

Pvt Joe Ed Kleypas of Burlington was killed in action in Germany on April 11 during World War II. He was 20 and had joined the service at 18, participating from Normandy to the Rhine. A Requiem High Mass was held at St Michael’s church in Burlington for him.

Mrs. David H. Smith Dies at 85 in Austin
Mrs. David H. Smith 85 died at her Austin home Sunday April 22 1945 after about a month of illness. She was born Fannie Gordon in Arkansas and lived in Maysfield before moving to Austin in 1912. Surviving children include Claude Van Morgan Ernest Forest and Mrs. M A Hurst and Dr David P Smith, plus 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
