Dates Set For Beef Vote In Texas Referendum

The USDA announced tentative dates for the national Beef Referendum with registration June 6 to 17 and voting July 5 to 15. J D Sartwelle of Houston chairs the Texas Beef Development Task Force noting the self help program aims to stabilize and improve the beef market. The Beef Research and Information Act would authorize a 3 tenths of 1 percent levy on animal sales to fund beef research promotion education and foreign market development. The funds would be managed by a 68 member Beef Board with cattlemen nominees.

TP&L Embraces Carter Energy Proposals and Lignite Plan

TP&L President J F Skelton says the utility already adopts Carter energy targets including a shift from gas and oil to coal and nuclear. Lignite use rose to 40 percent now and 62 percent by 1978, with Comanche Peak nuclear unit planned for 1981. The firm formed Chaco Energy for New Mexico coal and will convert plants to lignite. A massive buildup aims for 72 percent lignite, 18 percent nuclear/coal, and 10 percent gas by the mid 1980s.
