City Council Meeting Hears Complaints And Decisions

The Tuesday session drew about 30 attendees at the fire hall with concerns on street drainage the city pool and a ditch near railroad tracks north of 8th St The council discussed a grievance monthly and debated pool fees gas rate requests and a carnival near homes while approving light bulbs for a softball league a teletype for the police and a no cost traffic officer program.

YHS Tennis Team Poised for Historic District Title

With F.M.L. Monday posting two preset wins over him and forcing a junior district titlist to three sets, YHS gains momentum from an 17-tournament schedule. Word says players who left tennis may rejoin the district champions as the first YHS team tennis crown since the new gym. Younger players eye 4A duals next year and push Cameron to learn beyond tennis as they strive to prove they belong with top programs.

Cobb Reelected To Head Cameron School Board

Cameron school board president Calvin Cobb was reelected to a new term at a regular meeting on Monday. Forrest Sapp was elected vice president and Bill Hornung secretary. Becky Magre joined as a board member and was sworn in by Supt. Buddy Dulin.

Dedication Set For Youth Expo Building

A dedication ceremony for the new Youth Exposition Building in Cameron is scheduled for May 7. The building opens at 10 a.m. with a program at 10:30 led by Brenda Hoelscher and featuring guest speaker and county FFA, FHA, and 4-H representatives.

National Disaster Survival Test TV Event

NBC TV airs The National Disaster Survival Test on May 1 at 7 p.m. CST. The 90 minute program, produced with the National Safety Council, uses actual disasters and survivor interviews to test viewers knowledge and coping skills at home. Milam County youth exhibits are planned with 4-H FHA and FFA booths, livestock, refreshments, and Thorndale High School music.

Daylight Savings Time returns this Sunday and clocks move forward one hour on Saturday night. The change aims to give an extra hour of daylight for activities like mowing, fishing, or gardening. Remember the saying Spring forward, Fall back.

Gause Competing In District 10 Community Improvement Test

Veterans Benefit Van to Visit Cameron for Informational Hour

A mobile van staffed by two veterans benefits counselors will tour Cameron on Friday offering information and counseling for veterans and dependents. Located on the vacant lot south of the courthouse on Main and Fannin from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the program aims to help those not fully using benefits access education, employment, home loans, medical care, disability, pensions, life insurance, death benefits, and other veteran benefits.

Rock-A-Thon to Benefit Cancer Society at Cameron Mall

Yee High School National Honor Society hosts a Rocking-Chair-A-Thon on Saturday April 23 from 9 to 6 at the downtown Cameron mall to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Participants can obtain pledge forms at Yoe High O J Thomas or Ada Henderson or at local banks. Three prizes will be awarded for top fundraiser oldest rocker and youngest rocker along with live entertainment and broad participation expected.

City tax rebates rise 33 percent from last year

Cameron reports 35424.93 this year in sales tax rebates with 4336.19 received this month. Comptroller Bullock notes reduced refunds handling from 4.76 percent to 2 percent increasing cities’ take by about 3 percent. Buckholts totals 736.33 through April. L flatlands and Rockdale record 26127 with 4660 refund. Rogers up 5 percent with 2064 refunds.

Cameron groups seek Shell Oil RadianCorp info update

Citizens meet at the Cameron Chamber to discuss a revised and supplementary RadianCorp report for Shell Oil Co. A committee will be appointed to gather Cameron’s offerings and meet Shell PR manager Bill Devereux to present findings.
