18 AA District Track Meet Set For Thursday

The 18AA district track meet takes place at Yee High School Athletic Field with five district schools. Yeomen and Belton are tipped for close contest as Cameron leads overall. Belton cannot seize first even with all event wins. Prelims start 9 45, finals at 2. Coach Jim Speer says his runners are positioned for best performance.

Services Held For Mrs. W. A. Sproull

Funeral services for Mrs. W. A. Sproull aged 91 percent were held Wednesday at 2 p m. at Green Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev T A Binford and Rev P L Caperton officiated. Burial followed in Walkers Creek Cemetery. She leaves son Claude Sproull Cameron daughter Katherine Sproull Cameron brother Tom Brown Casden Alabama eight grandchildren 21 great grandchildren and 26 great great grandchildren.

Buckholts FFA Banquet Honors Seniors and Members

The Buckholts School cafeteria hosted the Annual Parent and Son Banquet with 82 guests and 28 FFA members. Guest speaker H. D. Maxwell Milam County Superintendent spoke on How Not To Be A Success. Carroll Wayne Gleser won the DeKalb Award and Chapterstar Farmer Award.

Knights Of Pythias Endorse New Newton Memorial Hospital Plan

Milam Lodge 125 of the Knights of Pythias endorsed a $400,000 Newton Memorial Hospital project at a Monday meeting. The lodge approved a resolution backing the plan with the Chamber of Commerce and advisory board and named a committee to liaison with civic clubs and Milam County lodges. Grand Jury Recesses Eight Days In Milam District

The Milam District Grand Jury met five and half hours on Monday and recessed until April 19. District Judge O. D. Graham said no report will be available until the current session ends. The jury first convened March 24 with hearings on March 25 and 28 prior to the Monday session.

Milam County A&M former students will gather at the First Christian Church Fellowship Hall in Rockdale at 7 30 p m Thursday April 21 for the fifty seventh anniversary Muster of Texas A M men. The Cameron Country Club hosts the annual Cameron Invitational Golf Tournament on Sunday May 15. Entries close at 12 noon May 15 with a four dollar entry fee. Free barbecue chicken will be served to participating players.

Cameron Little League Plans Field Work and May 7 Registration

Cameron Little League officials announced a May 7 registration for boys with no fee, as four team managers prepare rosters. A meeting at Cameron Country Club elected Bassel Wilson as chair and tapped nine directors including Chester Simons and Dr. Gus Evans Jr. The American Legion donated 111 for bats and balls, bleachers will be painted, and league status aligned with the National Association.

Fourth Golf Tourney Set for April 26 at Cameron Country Club

The Cameron Women's Golf Association announces the Fourth Annual Invitational Golf Tournament to be held April 26 at Cameron Country Club. Play begins at 6 a.m. with coffee and doughnuts, lunch at noon, and a dinner with awards featuring silver prizes. Tournament chairman is Mrs. Bernice Lester assisted by co chairwoman Mrs. Alice Goehler. Invitations have gone to 47 women’s clubs and organizations in central Texas and nearby areas.

Taylor High Student Wins 1960 Alcoa Scholarship

Miss Jo Ann Burruss of Taylor High School won the 1960 Alcoa Foundation Scholarship for Rockdale Works. She was one of 13 candidates and will receive a $2 500 annual cash award over four years. The selection was made by a board of area officials including H Maxwell and school superintendents from Milano Taylor Rockdale and Thrall.

Milam County Increases Cotton Acreage For Record Plantings

Milam County reports a 3 000 acre boost to cotton planting bringing total to 54 500 acres, a record since Soil Bank. Milam also notes potential 22 000 bale fall crop if planted. County agents say corn and maize crops mostly planted with replanting where rains were heavy.

Chamber Directors Back Newton Memorial Hospital Program

The Cameron Chamber of Commerce directors unanimously endorsed the building program for Newton Memorial Hospital. Dr W R Newton Cameron spoke on about 250000 in hospital salaries and 250000 in related expenses in Cameron during a year. The drive seeks 650000 to match a 160000 Hill-Surton federal grant and 60000 in out of county contributions if Milam County raises local funds. A Newton Memorial Hospital Campaign Headquarters opened on South Houston next to the Chamber.
