Cameron Little League to field 14 squads for summer play

Cameron Little League officials approved a 2400 budget to buy bases uniforms and equipment for 14 summer squads at Cameron Field. About 275 boys are expected to participate with five named teams Bears Braves Yankees Indians and a fifth team. The program adds a supervisor chief umpire and volunteers including a scorekeeper and publicity reporter.

Speeder pursued to Rosebud at 110 mph endangers town

Cameron police chased Alfred Kurtis, 23, in a 1955 Studebaker from Cameron to Rosebud at speeds up to 110 mph. After a roadblock, Kurtis spun out, hit a curb, and stopped. He received seven stitches for a facial gash and pleaded guilty to speeding in City Court, paying fines of 50 and 60 dollars.

Milam County Ballot Totals Show Runoff Candidates

Final Milam County tally from April 4 reports unofficial results. William Blakley leads with 622 votes and Jim Wright has 447, with 120 additional late votes. Runoff set for May as Tower leads six man field with about 325 000 votes and Blakley tops Democratic contenders with about 190 000.

Girl Scout Executive Addresses Cameron Rotary

Mrs Opel Clifton of Austin executive director of the Colorado Lakes Area for Girl Scouts spoke to Cameron Rotarians on Girl Scouting. Introduced by Lester Williams area day camp chairman, Clifton stressed the value of Girl Scout activities for young girls as Williams attended as special guest.

Services Tuesday For Bob Blake 76

Funeral services were held in Milano for Bob Blake 76 with Rev. James Henderson and Rev. H M Rowley officiating. Burial followed at Milano Cemetery. Blake died April 10 at 5 25 p m at his Milano home. He was born January 1 1885 in Alabama and worked at Wm P Carey Lumber Company in Cameron before retirement. Survivors include 2 sons 2 daughters 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren with pallbearers named Haddox Haddox Ant his Pratt Woods Walker Weiser Miller.

Minstrel Shows Set for Yee High Auditorium

Cameron Lions Club presents the 61 Minstrel at Yee High School Auditorium on Friday and Saturday at 8 pm. The event features a large chorus, six endmen, special acts, and a variety of comedy routines to support Cameron civic projects including the library. Proceeds go to local charities with tickets available from Lions Club members and at the door.

Rockdale Youth Wins Alcoa 61 Scholarship

John Crow of Rockdale named winner of the 1961 Alcoa Foundation Scholarship for Rockdale Works. He will receive $2,500 over four years for college. Crow, drum major of Rockdale High School Band, is a National Merit Scholar recipient and National Honor Society president. He plans to attend Davidson College and was among 24 candidates.

Rev Cobb Wins Pastor's Award in Texas Synod

The Rev. Gerald R. Cobb of Ben Arnold E&R Church is named rural minister of the year by the Texas Synod of Evangelical Re formed Churches. He is nominated for the Texas Rural Minister of the Year program after world Heifer Projects work and service as southwest representative. He travels by plane delivering cattle to Asia and Nepal and has spoken to civic groups across Central Texas. He also serves on the Texas Council of Churches and the CROP Committee, and pilots a Luscombe for preaching engagements.

Banquet Honors Sunshine Bowlers at Cameron Country Club

Fifteen trophies were awarded at the Sunshine Women's Bowling League banquet with The Falstaff team winning the top team trophy. Individual honors went to Evelyn Burke Frieda Anderle Lillie Peck and Frances Villines among others. Young Boy Treated For Suspected Rattlesnake Bite

James Russell Fikes, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Grady Fikes of 1108 W. Main, was treated for a suspected rattlesnake bite at St. Edwards Hospital Monday morning and released in good condition Tuesday. Doctors could not confirm a bite but treatment was given.

Obie Mack Faces Jury Hearings On Rockdale Fracas

Milam County jurors will hear assault with intent to murder charges against Obie Mack 30, Rockdale. He is indicted for attacking John Hirt and J M Dick Tuma, with the latter killed in a Sept. 17, 1960, scuffle. Other Milam cases include a Ft Hood soldier’s three year suspended term for a Dec. shooting at Bubba Nelsons Tavern.

Four Injured In Car Pickup Mishap Near Hoyte

A Sunday morning crash on State Highway 36 near Hoyte injured four. Driver Donald Ray Ezzell aged 17 from Houston and driver Calvin Henry Skrabanek of Temple, plus two Temple passengers Deloris Sefcik and David Sefcik, were taken to Newton Hospital with David later moved to a Temple hospital. Ezzell had borrowed a pickup to tow gas to a stranded car after its fuel ran out and was making a U turn when the collision occurred.

First Baptist Calls Education Director

The First Baptist Church plans to call Emmet Carson a 31 year old May graduate of Southwestern Baptist Seminary to be music and educational director. Carson, a native of Enid Oklahoma, has 11 years of private music education and visited the church three weeks ago and again this Sunday. Francis Cox chairs the church M&E committee.
