Muskrats plentiful on county marshes as traps and gear are readied for the January 1 opening. Trappers expect steady prices up to last season, with hides selling from cents to 2 dollars and meat near 0 cents a pair. Brown pelts go to U.S. markets while black furs are exported abroad.
National Safety Council predicts total US traffic deaths for the year at 31 290, the lowest since 1933, with November marking a 13th straight month of decreases. Through November 70,000 deaths are reported for the year, down from 35,770 last year, amid lower fatalities despite steady highway travel.
Maryland WPA employment falls to 15 645 as of December 2 from a October high of 16 545. Baltimore city totals drop to 9 160 in November while 1938 figures surpass 1937 totals for the year. February 28 1939 is the deadline for a new appropriation. Public jail placements drop about fifty percent in 1938. private employment rises twenty five percent.
The 1938 year ends with modest prosperity across Dorchester County as tax sales stay low and farming fishing and stores show gains. The county awards a twelve room fire proof building contract to Charles E. Brohawn & Bros for the Seminary School replacement, and Zion Church property is sold to the same firm. A special Eastern Shore meeting in Cambridge seeks uniform relief and road legislation while counties face relief funding challenges.
Merchants say Christmas sales were strong with many stores reporting record takings though some districts closed early to allow inventories. The season saw abundant gifts from bicycles to skates, while churches enjoyed high attendance and parents balanced joy with the need for caution on crowded streets.
Dr. J. Walter Hastings a longtime Dorchester county veterinarian has been appointed by Governor Nice to fill the vacancy on the Veterinarian Examining Board caused by the death of Dr. R. W. Smith. Hastings is noted for tuberculosis and Bangs disease eradication efforts and for funds recognizing Dorchester as a TB tested county. He is a University of Pennsylvania veterinary graduate and a former Army Veterinary Corps member.
The Du Pont company announces an $8,000,000 nylon plant to be built at Seaford Delaware. Construction will begin soon with about 1509 workers drafted for the year and full operation expected early next year. The facility will be 1000 by 300 feet, 300000 square feet of floor space, steel and concrete with air conditioning and many windows. A 10 acre fenced site along the Nanticoke River will house factory offices and storage. Cement foundations will start first followed by steel framing and brick facing.
Funeral services were held yesterday for Mrs Margaret E Mosten aged T1 years, mother of Theodore I F Boston superintendent of Dorchester County schools. Services were at her East New Market home conducted by Rev A F Zimmerman of Seaford Del. Interment in East New Market Cemetery. Survived by husband J Boston and children Mrs L H Stevens Williamsburg, Mrs T L Henry, Elsie Boston of East New Market, and Mr Boston of this city.
DORCHESTER COUNTY police moved today to end a wave of petty thieving as Cambridge police search for the persons who cut a safe bottom at the Cambridge Auto Company and stole its contents. Tires worth 125 dollars stolen from Johns Kissinger Easton auto dealer were recovered by Police Chief Grason W Price and Patrolman James Leonard.
Governor-elect O'Conor said the state budget will be prepared early to allow legislators time for review. He plans daily conferences with three commissions to study the budget and reorganize state departments. He has also assembled data for his inaugural speech and outlines are complete.
William W Meekins 76 retired insurance agent died Wednesday morning at his Cambridge home after a two week illness. He retired in 1926 after twenty five years with Prudential Life Insurance as assistant superintendent of the Eastern Shore district. He also served as state oast inspector and secretary to Josiah Kerr during his Eastern Shore congressional service. Survived by wife Marie Haskett Merkins a son Dr Gilbert E Meekins Cambridge a daughter Kathleen M Fountain Cambridge and two grandsons James G Busick and Gilbert Meekins Jr Funeral set for 2 P M at Pridey burial in Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery.
The Caroline Co. Older Youth Council program committee will meet Monday January 9 at the home of Miss Bessie M Spafford in Denton to discuss activities for the year. Chairwoman Mrs Earle Hutchinson of Kidkely and committee members Carmen Reagan and Joseph Callis of Federalsburg will attend.
Doris Elizabeth Phillips of Cambridge married Robert Carlton Snow of Baltimore in a 6 p m ceremony at Zion M E Church. The couple's reception followed at Cambridge Country Club and they plan to live in Baltimore where Snow works for Butler Bros.
The Dorchester County Board of Education in special session December 23 1938 urged the County Commissioners to fund the original school building program. If needed they asked for federal or other funds and rejected omitting any proposed improvements. They also adjusted a fire insurance policy and approved bids on several school projects with Zion Church site bids of 150 dollars accepted.
Officials in the Department of Agriculture propose new schemes to bolster the Farm Act of 1938 as agricultural prices hit historic lows. Secretary Wallace and lawmakers discuss debt relief, price supports, and subsidies while exploring cotton and wheat loan expansions amid excess supply.
Thieves broke into the Cambridge Auto Company office between six Wednesday evening and 6:30 Thursday morning, entering via the shop window and chiseling through the safe to steal the cash. State, county and city police investigated the robbery, discovered by L. D. Noble about 6:30 Thursday morning.
Harry T. Johnson died Saturday morning after a period of illness starting in November. He and Mrs. Johnson moved to Cambridge in 1928 and lived on Hambrooks Boulevard facing the Great Choptank River. He had worked in insurance with the American Casualty Company of Reading and remained in the business after moving to Cambridge.
Harold Wells, 36, a volunteer fireman, was critically wounded in the leg when a single bar shotgun exploded as it fell from a second story Negro home near Hurlock during a blaze. He was treated at Cambridge Hospital where many volunteers offered blood for a transfusion. A second pellet struck Lloyd Denne. others escaped injury.
Maryland relief expenses reached a record 766,893 dollars in November as cold weather and layoffs push welfare costs higher. The Board of State Aid and Charities reported 17,261 seniors received aid, 20,500 children in 7,499 families got assistance under Aid to Dependent Children, with thousands more applications pending.
The Vienna Chapter of the F F A and the Vienna 4 H club held a Christmas party attended by fifty or more boys and girls from Vienna and nearby. Principal Jack Wright led games and stunts while Clay Webb Jr and Charles Fulter assisted. Music and table games complemented the program. Refreshments included homemade ice cream and layer cakes.
Harold L. Ickes announces to President Roosevelt that 99 percent of the 1938 PWA program is complete. The report shows accelerated progress in the last six months, with the chance of reaching one hundred percent by January 1.
