The heaviest snowfall of the year blanketed the county causing widespread business slowdown and several ditched vehicles. No serious injuries were reported as snow plows cleared highways and oysters unaffected overall despite cold weather risking later shortages.
A regional conference for University of Maryland extension agents on the Eastern Shore will be held in Salisbury from January 25 to 27. Dr. Thomas B. Symons will direct the event with theme Land Use Program Planning. Attending will be E J Oswald Venia M Keller and county agents across the shore plus university specialists and federal program representatives.
The Diamondback reports University of Maryland plans a large recreation center attached to the Coliseum by an archway. It would house three basketball courts a 50 by 150 foot pool two large classrooms and offices. Funding would continue a student fee totaling about 24000 this year.
James Mills died Saturday at his home near Wittman. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. L. Reiter, Mills' longtime pastor, with burial in the Vienna Methodist Episcopal cemetery. He is survived by his widow, five sons Ralph Howard Lester Gilbert arthur and one daughter Pauline. Reiter has retired and is working in church sponsored advertising.
District Scouters met at the Riverview Inn Federalsburg to review 1938 progress and adopt an $8,000 budget for 1939. 76 troops spread across Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore showed 19 percent growth in 1938 with 1,357 enrolled scouts and several new troops formed in Leipsic Frederica Easton Cambridge Salisbury Crisfield.
Army engineering sources released figures for a tunnel under the Chestyake and Delaware Canal to replace the wrecked St Georges bridge. Total cost pegged at 4 000 000 with a high fixed span at 1 400 000 and replacement span 850 000. Vehicular tunnel would cost about four times as much to maintain due to 24 hour ventilation and wrecking crew duties.
Funeral services for George W. Millard 78 well known Vienna merchant were held Friday at St Pauls Protestant Episcopal Church conducted by Rev William McCleland assisted by Rev D W Charlton Interment followed in St Pauls Church cemetery Vienna He was a son of the late John and Harriet Millard of New York State and a former vice president of the Vienna Bank of the County Trust Company He belonged to Choptank Lodge of Masons East New Market and is survived by a sister Miss Emma Millard of Vienna.
The 23rd annual Maryland Agricultural Society convention at Lord Baltimore Hotel on January 10 12 and 18 drew many county residents. Affiliated groups meeting included Associated Women of the Maryland Farm Bureau Maryland State Poultry Council and others. A key resolution endorsed tax changes and better county road control plus licensing canners and agents to protect growers.
For 75 years Shore Masonry history sees Harry B. Wright Jr. of Preston chosen as master elect of Preston Lodge 207 A. F. and A. M. after his father, Harry B. Wright, past Grand Master, witnessed initiatory degrees alongside four other masons last Friday night.

Maryland hopes to restore the oyster industry to its former size with a $5 million annual boost and thousands of jobs. Lewis Radcliffe of the Oyster Institute of America says co op advertising and state producers could double present markets and return Maryland to prominence. He notes per capita oyster consumption has fallen from five pints in 1883 to about four tenths today, despite better transport. Other regions show similar declines and potential for growth.
The two price scheme for surplus farm products has been abandoned by the Department as a solution to marketing problems. Secretary Henry A. Wallace said the two price phrase is dead and the department will boost consumption instead. Grapefruit surplus is allocated to relief agencies, while a plan to lower prices on cheaper cotton mattresses aims to aid various income groups. A cotton industry committee was to meet to review results of the investigation.
A study shows most automobile accidents occur in rural areas, not cities, and calls for stricter rural highway traffic control. The Safety Council urges individual responsibility with seven steps to prevent accidents, stressing mastery over danger and lifelong caution.
Richard Slocum, a Cambridge high school junior, captured two raccoons by pestering them with mud on his muskrat trap line, using no large traps.
HOLC released figures through Herbert L. Grymes showing higher average rentals for HOLC dwellings in the state and a rising tempo in sales of foreclosed properties. By year end HOLC had disposed of 73 dwellings, with 77.2 percent of accounts current and 92.6 percent annual collection rate.
The Rev George E Brown aged 63 retired Methodist Protestant minister died suddenly at his home Sunday afternoon after feeding his chickens. He served churches in Cambridge Washington Georgetown and Baltimore and helped build Grace Church in Baltimore. Surviving wife two daughters and two sons. Funeral services held at 11 AM Wednesday at home with burial in Centreville.
The National Comet Association will hold races at Oxford on the weekend after Labor Day drawn by President Dr. John Eiman and defending champ Edward Merrill of Philadelphia. The Tred Avon river site aids miles river yacht clubs and bay area boating groups. over fifty boats entered last year in New York.
Dorchester Recreation Council notes progress with four white leaders and five colored coordinators managing activities. December attendance includes 324 colored participants and 54 white participants across Cambridge and county sites. Programs cover preschool, basketball, crafts, music, and social recreation at multiple centers.
Four Dorchester County volunteer fire companies formed the Dorchester County Volunteer Firemen's Association to improve efficiency and service in the county. Officers include President J E Parks Cambridge Vice President Donald Wheatley of Secretary and Treasurer Martin Sellers Hurlock. Directors are James Bradley C R Pitts Leroy Willey Granville Hales J Otis McAllister James Noble Webster Hurley Winfield Webster.
The Church Creek 4H Club girls met at leader Fruth Gillis's home on January 6 1939. They learned cooking and etiquette from Miss Brooks Home Demonstration Agent and enjoyed games. The club will reconvene January 20 with Annie Gills as club reporter.
Representatives of the Home Beneficial Association from Maryland and Virginia gathered at Salisbury’s Wicomico Hotel for their annual banquet. Talbot county attendees called it the largest and best yet, with brief addresses by Salisbury officials and B. F. Dye. L. R. Brookson served as toastmaster as guests danced to a noted orchestra.
Mr and Mrs Joseph Schaffner celebrated their fifty eighth wedding anniversary at Riverview Farm Cambridge following long years in Walbrook He is 76 she 74 The couple have two sons and two daughters living in Cambridge and Baltimore respectively.
Construction engineers set up temporary quarters at Seaford as preparations begin for the Du Pont Companys new eight million dollar nylon plant. Excavation is expected to begin later this week with about 200 workers at the site earlier in the week, who were sent home.
Cambridge High School will face Crisfield High in a doubleheader on the local floor tomorrow night. In a prior Crisfield game Cambridge trailed 11 10 at halftime but surged in the fourth quarter to outplay one of their main Shore rivals. A recent anticipated thriller was canceled by Caesar Rodney due to unsafe roads.
