Cambridge stores from Central Square to all districts report rising Christmas shopping activity. Stores advertise everything from turkeys to baby shoes as the New Deal aids consumer spending, urging residents to shop locally before year end.
William J. Shea City Treasurer releases full committee roster for the Testimonial Dinner honoring Congressmen Meyer Richard M. Russell at the Hotel Continental on December 28. Ticket demand runs high as Dan Leahy Election Commissioner and ticket committee chairman forecasts a busy two weeks. Reservations available through Leahy Shea or William McMenimen. Local committee members include Shea as chairman Clarence P. Kidder and Daniel F. O'Brien.
City Treasurer William J Shea is named ideal chairman for a December banquet hosted by Mayor Richard M Russell. The event aims to be among the largest in Greater Boston with notable local officials in attendance.
A Cambridge plan envisions widening Brookline Street from Memorial Drive to Columbia Street to 80 feet. The idea aims to connect Memorial Drive with the northern artery via a cross city boulevard backed by the Cambridge Planning Board and supported by local businessmen.
The School Committee's lengthy meeting discussed the Nov. 22 election result naming John M. Tobin as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Debates over legality and parliamentary moves continued as Tobin's status was ratified amid votes and motions. The board adjourned without a clear conclusion on some procedural points.
At the regular meeting the License Board warned several license holders over liquor concerns. Wm E Downie owner of the Step Inn Cafe at 177 Hampshire Street faced a charge of serving after hours after a police report observed a taxi outside at 2 35 A M on December 4. Lights were out but four men and two women sat at a booth with four beers found under the table. Mrs Downie admitted letting the officer in along with Sergt Wm Curtin and Officer Paul Keenan who noted two glasses tipped over. Keenan identified members of the group not employees. Curtin said the proprietor asked him to play square and asserted everything was on the up and up.
In a crowded session the Cambridge City Council voted not to close streets in the proposed Federal Housing area after a lengthy hearing. Streets affected were School Harrison Moore and Clark, with unions targeted. Proponents included Prof Charles Killam and Cong Arthur Healey, while opposition came from Councillor Foley. Librarian appointments were postponed.
The Cambridge Tri- Club led by James Watt plans a Christmas party for younger members with games, contests, favors and a tree Tuesday afternoon at three. The Harvard Club of Boston defeated the Y team 4 to 2 Friday evening. Y team members include Captain Elliott Corse Coulter Edelstein Welch and Johnson.
