Mrs William H Taft suffered a nervous attack while en route to Mount Vernon aboard the yacht Sylph with friends. She was rushed back to the White House for rest and treatment, with doctors saying a few days of rest should restore her.
Chicago reports May delivery wheat rose to 1.30 dollars per bushel reaching a new high. Farmers and traders monitor the market as prices surge on strong demand and limited supply.
Victor C. Olander of the International Lake Seamen's union reports 500 Norwegian sailors under contract to come to the United States to take places of striking Great Lakes seamen. One batch has sailed. more arrivals are expected. The union will seek immigration action to block landings, citing a contract labor law violation.
Cambridge friends learn of a severe accident near Newark as a interurban car strikes a buggy carrying Dr. and Mrs. Harry E. Hunt. Mrs. Hunt, thrown from the buggy, suffered a fractured skull and serious injuries. she remained unconscious in hospital late Monday night.
Johann Salvator, the so called lost duke of Austria who vanished from Painesville Ohio after his claim to noble birth surfaced, showed up in Chicago via Racine Wisconsin. He met Austrian consul Otto Graf who doubted his identity and said the case would lead nowhere as Salvator returned to his machine shop job in Painesville.
Jeffersonian reporter visits the Watson farm near Fish Basket on the Birmingham mail route and notes two curiosities. A hen incubating eggs and caring for five kittens, guarded by Mrs. Watson in a locked nest, and a goose courting a rooster, keeping company daily along Wills Creek before the rooster is sold to end the romance.
At the Waldorf Astoria in New York on May 18 the National Association of Manufacturers discussed labor unions. A report by the committee on industrial education led by Anthony Ittner urged examining methods of organized labor, including a critique of Samuel Gompers. The convention endorsed not an attack on organized labor itself but on its methods, prompting debate and a vote to refer the report to a special committee.
The Jeffersonian reports the Missing Word contest initial results with Paul McCleary and S. M. Hadden among early participants. Winners note all three words must be correct, with emphasis on submitting important omitted words before 8 o clock.
Captain Peter C. Hains Jr. will be moved from Queens County Jail to Sing Sing today to begin an indeterminate sentence for first degree manslaughter in the Bayside Yacht Club killing of William E. Annis last August. The minimum term is eight years and the maximum sixteen, with hard labor. An appeal may follow the transfer.
The Cambridge High School commencement on June 3 at Colonial theater will honor the largest class yet, with 41 graduates: 19 young men and 22 young women. Diplomas will be presented by Dr. O F Lowry after ten orations and six choruses. The class sermon is set for May 30 at the First M E church by Rev. D E Carman with invitations for other churches to attend. The graduates include Max Dilley Paul Gillespie Elsie Barton Ralph Laughlin Helen Clark and many more.
John L. Dudley of this city applied to the court for a receiver’s appointment and the dissolution of the United States Express company. The move was argued in court with Dudley, a stockholder, asking the supreme court for a mandamus to compel Ward T. Platt to allow a books examination. Decision was reserved.
In Pittsburg and Western Pennsylvania, about 35,000 iron and steel workers will receive roughly a 10 percent wage increase on June 1 and July 1, restoring pay to pre April 1 levels. Most firms plan June 1 increases, with some delaying to July 1, excluding US Steel, Pittsburg Steel, and Youngstown Sheet. Major firms affected include Republic Iron and Steel, Jones and Laughlin, and Shenango valley furnaces.
Weather forecast notes fair conditions for Ohio and western Pennsylvania with light to moderate westerly winds. West Virginia expected fair today and Wednesday.

President Taft nominates Willis Bowland of Columbus for collector of internal revenue in Ohio. The move ends Dean Alderman of The Marietta Journal campaign for the post after a six week fight. Other nominations include Walter Clark for Alaska governor and James Williams civil service commissioner. Washington notes also name Hyman Davis Herbert Grant Alfred Rodway and William Washburn in various posts.
Lieut General Stoessel and Rear Admiral Nebogotoff were released from confinement today by order of the Czar. The men had been confined as punishment for the surrender of Port Arthur in the Russian Japanese war.
Speaker Cannon barred reopening floor battles over Jefferson Davis portrait ties to editorials attacking Hollingsworth. Ohio representative sought privilege to read insults into the record. reactions mixed with laughter as the matter stalled. A separate Tex resolution could compel the attorney general to disclose steps to null contracts between U S Steel and Tennessee Coal and Iron if public interests are affected.
Senator Depew of New York in a Senate speech endorsed General Hancock’s view that the tariff is a local issue. He praised Hancock’s line and argued the protective principle faces attacks from loyalty to it. Depew urged a petroleum duty and warned removal of cotton protection would threaten Southern and Appalachian manufacturers.
Akron Ohio May 18 fire nearly wiped out the seven story Power building causing an estimated loss of 1,500,000 dollars. Fire crews fought the blaze through the day.
Louise Arbogast, 19, daughter of Louis Arbogast the Minneapolis butcher slain last Thursday, is jailed in St Paul on murder charges. Authorities deem her likely insane at the time of the crime. She allegedly overheard fortune tellers promising a break in at her home.
