Tragic Columbia San Pedro Collision Kills Scores
Relatives of passengers fear the worst as the California coast disaster unfolds near Shelter Cove. The Columbia and the San Pedro collided at midnight, plunging both ships into the sea with 100 to 160 dead. Survivors total about 200. Eureka reports 107 passengers and 87 crew saved, with four lifeboats recovered and more rescues ongoing.

Mrs Margaret W Baker aged 83 died from effects of a fractured hip after a fall from a chair six weeks earlier. Funeral services were held from her home on Friday with Rev Woollett presiding.
