In San Francisco on July 9 Mayor Eugene E B Schmitz was convicted of extortion and sentenced to five years in the penitentiary. The court room erupted in applause as Judge Dunne imposed the sentence, following the earlier conviction of Lehmitz for extorting 1175 from French restaurant keepers.

St. Clair Michigan July 9 The Great Lakes Engineering works announce an indefinite shutdown of its local ship yard due to an unsatisfactory labor market. Only a small force has been at work since a week ago when the employer declared a strike.
Ed Macklin, a 25 year old barber, was killed in Knoxville Tennessee when saloonkeeper Edward McNew shot him in the Littorals Bluff area after learning of alleged infidelity between Macklin and McNew's wife. The shooting occurred as Macklin accompanied McNew's wife crossing a river bridge.
George Hook aged 48 of College Point fell from the ninth floor of a building at Eighty fourth street and West End avenue and suffered a skull fracture minor in severity. He is at Roosevelt hospital expected to recover. Contusions on his arms and body indicate he twisted in the shaft during descent. He regains consciousness only after being found. Hook could not describe the sensation of the fall saying he plunged to the ground and landed in a heap.
In Oyster Bay on July 9 a strong young man tried to reach President Roosevelt at four in the morning but the effort was frustrated by guards and staff, leaving event details unclear and the president unharmed.
Miss Lucille Morse of Pittsburgh with friends near Spruce Creek caught the largest trout in years. The speckled beauty weighed five pounds ten ounces and measured 24 inches, previously shy in the pool for seasons. In Ravenna, Ohio, 14-year-old John Vaughan drowned in a shallow area.
On a bluff, Macklin and Mrs McNew were lunching when both drew pistols. McNew fired first wounding Macklin in the forearm and chest. Two more shots killed him. McNew surrendered at the police station. Macklin died at the morgue. Mrs McNew, 25, said they had spent about an hour on the bluff.
In Greensburg on July 9 a train moving at 50 mph caused M ke Vuria to fall from the train with a fractured skull. The incident was reported as part of Tri State news in brief items from several Pennsylvania towns.
An unnamed member of a respected family, excited by a submarine boat he claims to have perfected, arrived at Sagamore Hill in a touring car with two machinists. A Secret Service guard halted him, and he was told to wait in the village until morning after an interview with Secretary Loeb. He will be cared for at home.

In McCloud Oklahoma on July 9 Joseph Brawley stood in a road and fired a repeating shotgun at a wagon with four people killing Charles Smith a farm laborer and severely wounding Inez Tonio daughter of a farmer. Inez will recover. the shooting stems from an old feud.
Brady lake incident ends with drowning threat and a man kneeling in prayer with his mother before leaving. John Berry, a former hotel head waiter in Chicago, is arrested in Johnstown, Pa, for the four year old murder of Fred Boyd, with his true name Walter Edwards, as officers move to transport him to Chicago. East Liverpool hears Webber vs city over dry election after June vote. Akron sees divorce suit by Mrs Jump amid claims of abuse and wealth loss. Cleveland notes Rockefeller’s 68th birthday at Euclid Club, watching Olympic Cup play among golf crowd.
New York July 9 Acting on a petition by Attorney General William S Jackson Justice W M Platze k appointed R Burnham Moffatt to hear evidence on alleged illegal combination by Postal Telegraph and Cable and Western Union to raise rates. First hearing set for July 16. Petitions seek summons for Clowry Mackay Gould Harriman Jesup and company officials to produce records.
Washington reports Viscount Aoki the Japanese ambassador declines to discuss indications of an indefinite suspension of renewal negotiations over a clause permitting exclusion of Japanese laborers. He defers to state department officials while Hayashi’s views are noted by embass y officials. Aoki also says news of Evans fleet movements is not echoed in Japan though Europe and the US discuss it.
Dr. Julian P Thomas an aeronaut lies in serious condition at Fordham hospital with a compound leg fracture and internal injuries after a high speed crash into a trolley pole in the Bronx. Actress Florence Haas lost a leg and Miss Grace Rogers suffered internal injuries. both were riding with Thomas.
Washington July 9 Ratifications of the Dominican treaty settling Santo Domingo debt were exchanged by Acting Secretary Bacon and Dominican minister Jou Loit. The pact awaits presidential proclamation before Dominican officials can float a 20 million dollar loan to cover outstanding obligations.
West Newton Pennsylvania July 9 Andrew Luptock known locally as John L a giant Austrian died from heat while working at the American Reduction Company plant. He was famous for a magnificent physique and likened to the former prize fighter.
Paris July 9 The report that Major Alfred Dreyfus former captain of artillery who was convicted of treason and imprisoned at Devils Island will retire on a pension has been confirmed The retirement is attributed to ill health
Readings from San Francisco depositions on the Bradley blast are presented to the jury in Boise Idaho as part of the case against William D Haywood for the murder of Frank Steunenberg. The evidence centers on whether the explosion was gas or a bomb and whether Orchard could have planted it as alleged.

An armed, heat crazed workman on a Wall Street building attacked workers, fatally injuring one and wounding two others. He was then besieged by the crowd and narrowly escaped death himself.
Sean Reynolds, president of the coal miners' union at Mont Lake Tennessee, was shot by labor agent W. H. Bellows of the Mont Lake Coal Company and died from his wounds. The Mont Lake mines are non union.
