Four deaths and 388 injured marked the Fourth of July record in New York and Brooklyn with nine in critical condition. Reports from Long Island and suburbs expected to raise totals as hospitals finish tallying.
Arthur Granville Langham former president of the Provident Life Assurance society died in Seymour Indiana after a cannon cracker exploded in his hand during a Fourth of July weekend visit. Langham and other Louisville guests were at John K Peter's home when the incident occurred. He was taken to a hospital and did not regain consciousness after surgery.
Chicago marked a restrained Fourth of July with thirty-five accidents reported by midnight and no fatalities. The city, cooler and rainy, saw celebrations mostly at home in suburbs and outskirts, while thousands left for resorts. The prior year had twelve deaths and 114 injuries in Chicago.
During a Hanford ball game between Mucklow and Hanford Cal Newman attacked J B Adkins with a rock possibly fatally injuring him. Adkins fled to woods as a relative struck Newman with a baseball bat. Charles Newman fired three shots at Adkins before being overpowered. Police search for armed friends of Newman.
Firefighters battled a blaze in Marietta Ohio as storage of unsold fireworks sparked an explosion that caused about 10000 dollars in damage to the Wittlig block. Fire crews reported the incident occurred today.
President Taft attended Norwich Connecticut’s 250th anniversary amid a grand parade and civic displays. He spoke on religious liberty and individual worship, noting historical intolerance but championing freedom today. An open-air pageant traced Norwich history from Mohegan and Narragansett conflicts to revolutionary times.
Nashville attorney general Caldwell, who prosecuted the Union City night riders, denounces the supreme court for reversing his cases. He calls the judges guilty of a judicial blunder and says retributive justice must be left to an avenging God, noting no way to retry the case under the decision.
In Scranton Pa on July 6 Lake Lincoln was dedicated by popular subscription in Nay Aug park before about 30000 people The Junior Order United American Mechanics unveiled a Lincoln monument while Italian societies presented a Lincoln bust and pedestal Senator Dolliver of Iowa was the principal speaker he argued that today’s people face a greater task than Lincoln’s era in reestablishing the idea that all men are created equal.
South Bend Indiana July 6 The man and wife who survived by rowing a boat over the dam in the St Joseph river were H Lindaman and wife of Chicago They were on their wedding trip.
The Guernsey Valley Fair Co. hosted a festive Fourth of July at Driving Park with morning and afternoon balloon ascensions, races, two baseball games, and fireworks. Attendance topped previous openings, with entries across events though two ladies contests were canceled. One minor fight occurred near the stables, swiftly handled by local officers.
At the Driving Park Monday a free for all near the stables left two men badly hurt and arrested. Mike Stork of Byesville and Charles Stevens of Trail Run fought with Fred Patten joining in. Stork escaped before officers could detain him. bottles were used and heads and faces were injured. A Byesville physician treated the wounded before jail transfer.
Columbus July 6 State Labor Commissioner Wirmel appoints five special agents to gather statistics from manufacturers James Murty of Springfield Henry Buede and A B Menke of Cincinnati M J Burke of Youngstown and George Smith of Norwalk to collect data.
W. Price and his nephew Leonard Price left Sunday for a visit at Mt. Sterling, visiting relatives and touring the area.
Miss May Miller has returned home after a visit with friends in Moundsville.
Mrs Sonora Stewart of Winterset spent Monday as the guest of Mrs Sarah McCulley on Steubenville Avenue.
A Packard belonging to John O. Schenk was ditched near Frazier's Crossing west of Cambridge on Sunday noon. Mrs. Schenk drove as the steering wheel jammed, sending the car into a ditch above a steep embankment. The hedge prevented a plunge, one wheel smashed and a lamp broken. Passengers included Schenk, two children, and Rhea Haskins. Young Schenk sustained a cut on his right leg treated by Dr. Bradford.
R V Acheson cashier of the Cambridge Savings Bank Co. was showing a visitor the new Brown high school when a board tipped him into a sewer ditch eight feet deep. He hit his head, suffered a bleeding gash needing three stitches, and was taken home for care. He is expected to recover.
Miss Florence Staire, living with the Murray family on West Steubenville Avenue, was badly burned when a firework exploded near her knees on Wheeling Avenue. Her dress caught fire and bystanders extinguished the blaze. A young man responsible fled the scene but police know his name. Dr. Vorhies treated Miss Staire as she was expected to recover in a few days. Separately, Walker Fife and wife report their young daughter fractured her leg after a porch fall on North Fifth Street.
Lady Gray and Captain Newton, aide to the governor general, are ill with scarlet fever at Government House Ottawa. Both are progressing favorably. The illness followed Lady Gray’s Toronto trip for the international women’s council, during which Newton accompanied her and the disease developed on the return journey.
St Clair Winiker, six, son of Mr and Mrs J W Winiker of Gibson Station, was hurt when a nail fragment struck his right eye about 10 am Monday. Grandfather split a nail for a farm repair and the piece flew up injuring the eye. Dr Arndt of Love City summoned. boy taken to Columbus to a specialist by B and O 103 Monday. doctors hope the eye can be saved.
Love City July 6 celebration drew large crowds for a parade of school children to the grove. Rev W G Rutledge of Uhrichsville and Hon John L McCreary of Guernsey county gave addresses. McCreary was well received. The Klondyke band and drum corps provided music. An evening W C T U entertainment in the opera house followed. No accidents reported.
Ava Ohio July 6 Frank Santa Pole aged about 32 committed suicide by jumping into a reservoir near the Detroit mine while double funeral services for Charles W Spiker and Emma Finley were held. Santa, despondent over finances and separation from his family, sank after leaping from his partner’s side. His body was recovered about two hours later as spectators watched. The reservoir is 15 feet deep and 150 feet long. Spiker formerly resided here and was about 72.
Stanley Ketchel of Michigan retained the world middleweight crown by decision over Billy Papke of Illinois after 20 rounds in San Francisco. Ketchel claimed a broken right hand in round six and a dislocated left thumb. referee Roche praised Ketchel for aggression and clean punches, noting the only knockdown occurred in round ten.

A Brooklyn father, his seven year old son, and a thirty five year old companion drowned near Jamaica Bay when a naphtha launch failed. The wife watched as the boy fell overboard and the father pursued him. A grocer, Lewis Edling, helped but was also swept away and drowned.
New York July 6 Francis Sushman representative in congress from Tacoma Washington died today in a hospital here of pneumonia after an operation He was a member of the ways and means committee and was known as the house humorist.
Miss Odessa McCollum of Cambridge R. D. 1 is spending a few days with relatives and friends in the city.
In a July 6 action near Patian on Jolo Island, Moro outlaw chief Jikiri and his entire band were killed by detachments from Sixth United States Cavalry aided by Mosquito Fleet and Philippine Constabulary under Captain George L. Byram. American casualties included one killed Private O Connell and three officers plus twenty enlisted men wounded. Lieutenants Kennedy Miller and Arthur H Wilson were among the wounded.
Esther M. Coddington three months old, daughter of Warren M. and Lulu P. Coddington, was killed when a descending sky rocket struck and crushed her skull as the family watched fireworks on Belmar hill Pittsburg July 6. Her parents and two older children witnessed the accident. A physician could not save the infant.
Denver July 6 Leaders of the national council of education argue the public school system should not aim to prepare every American boy for the presidency. Edwin G. Cooley notes many youths will become laborers or craftsmen and urges focus on practical skills over political leadership. He cites 2,000,000 prepared for presidency versus 30,000,000 for work in factories or farms.
Guisseppi Sanduce, who murdered Joseph Dardano, an Italian detective, was today electrocuted in Auburn prison. Two shocks were used.
Born to Mr and Mrs Robt Harrie on Monday July 5 a daughter joins the family in a local community.
