Indianapolis January 19. The United Mine Workers of America convenes to decide if a coal strike will occur again. Miners press for a negotiated anthracite wage contract and recognition as a party to negotiations, while operators vow to resist the proposed agreement.
Sacramento dispatch reports Governor Gillette received a Roosevelt telegram requesting all anti Japanese laws be held until the President can be heard from. The governor will comply with the request and suspend action.
Abbott Lawrence Lowell has been chosen to succeed Charles W. Eliot as Harvard University president when Eliot retires next spring. A Harvard graduate of 1877, Lowell began law practice in Boston in 1880 and published major works on government and politics. He has long taught at Harvard and co authored Colonial Civil Service.
Secretary of the Interior Garfield reports alleged wholesale frauds in lands west of the Mississippi. About 11 million acres are claimed to have been fraudulently acquired over two years by corporations and individuals. He seeks a further $500,000 in addition to prior requests, totaling $1 million for land recovery efforts.
In Washington on January 19 the senate deadlocked 27 to 27 and fixed the speaker of the house salary at 16000 dollars, higher than the present 12000 but below the proposed 20000. The outcome reflects a compromise position amid tense budget discussions.
Birds Run Oil and Gas Co. drilled Good Gasser at the Frank Forney farm north of the city. The well 1 yielded gas estimated 800 000 to 1 000 000 cubic feet daily. Local stockholders learned by telephone and congratulated each other. Present were Port E. Gibson C H Gibson A J Linn John Agar and Hargrove of Uhrichsville. Contractor Frank McKee said the well surpassed previous big wells and signaled a growing gas field ready for development.
President Roosevelt at a mass meeting in Metropolitan Memorial M E Church praised the Methodist denomination as an inspiration during his seven and a half years in office. He pledged a square deal not only at home but with Japan and said government would protect citizens while defending national interests. Bishop Cranston hailed church and state unity in service to humanity.
The president sent Congress a message advising passage of a law to proclaim February 12, 1909, as a special holiday marking Abraham Lincoln’s birth centennial.
Gov. Harmon asks the legislature to probe Cincinnati and Hamilton County affairs and fund executive investigations. He proposes a three member tax board to oversee all taxation, tax bonds for surety firms and dock and elevator firms, a state property inventory law, and making the Lincoln centennial a public holiday.

Albany news reports that Elihu Root was confirmed by the New York legislature in separate sessions and will be declared senator for a six year term beginning March 4. Root, aged sixty five, is a native of the state and former secretary of war and secretary of state.
Mrs Florence Maybrick, after fifteen years in an English prison for her husband’s murder, is reported engaged to marry Charles L. Wagner. Wagner has been managing her lecture tours since her return to America. She is forty seven, born in Mobile Alabama, daughter of banker William G. Chandler.
Tang Shao Yi special envoy of the Chinese government to the United States sails for Europe after praising his mission in America. He says the visit aimed to thank the United States for indemnity remission but observers think he sought a Washington alliance pledge. The envoy stayed optimistic as he departed aboard a liner.
A gas explosion in Portsmouth Ohio injures five including Fire Chief Fred Goltz and Joseph Frantz board member. Three firemen are severely hurt as the blast tears up the street at a busy intersection.
Caracas Jan 19 a protocol providing for arbitration has been agreed upon between Special Commissioner Buchanan representing the United States and Venezuela for settling disputes.
Fire continues to spread through the destroyed areas of Messina as soldiers battle the blaze. The odor of burning flesh lingers and authorities fear that survivors may be trapped and cremated in the ongoing flames.
Charles P. Taft of Cincinnati appeared before a Washington grand jury amid Panama canal libel proceedings. He said he received a district attorney request to attend and did not know if Douglas Robinson, the president's brother in law, was also summoned. The two names were cited in Roosevelt's published complaints.
Seven foreigners were killed and two wounded in a blaze that consumed three double houses of the Somerset Coal company at Mine Hill mine No 1 near Berlin. The fire began in rooms occupied by Frank Rossock and twelve boarders after a wedding fete.

Harrisburg, Jan 19. Boles Penrose won re election to the United States Senate by the Pennsylvania legislature. A Philadelphia native and lawyer, he has served in state public life since 1884 and will begin a new six year term on March 4. The joint election by both houses is set for tomorrow under federal law.
The House insurgents meet in Washington on Jan 19 and approve two principles. The house, not the speaker, would select all committees including Rules, and committees must be called at least once a week. A three member committee led by Gardner reports next Monday. The insurgents claim about 48 supporters.
Manila reports three heads were taken by Igorrote head hunters from an Ilocano village. A constabulary detachment pursued the raiders. The government assists in eliminating head hunting as raids become rarer each year.
