Washington Oct 25 The Post Office Department reports for the year ending June 30 1884 receipts excluding money orders amounted to 429,19635 while expenditures reached 464,11772 creating a deficiency of 3593137 attributed to the reduced postal rate. Last year showed a surplus of 2553190 and this year's shortfall will be trimmed by about 100000 from money order revenue. The result supports President Arthur's prior congressional message. Fruit packers switch to glass jars to deter decayed fruit sale in tin containers despite higher cost. jars are reusable but about 100 percent pricier.
