Long John Wentworth Dies in Chicago Pioneer and Politician
John Wentworth known as Long John died at his Sherman House rooms in Chicago. A towering 6 feet 6 inches, he rose from Chicago Democrat editor to mayor of Chicago and congressman. Born 1815 in Sandwich New Hampshire he entered Dartmouth in 1836 and arrived in Chicago in 1836 to shape the city press and politics. His estate valued at least 3 million dollars. He served as congressman, mayor, and on the Ways and Means Committee before retiring to a large Summit Cook County stock farm. He was married in 1844 to Roxanna Loomis. they had five children, all but one dying young.
